Pro-abortion writer\u00a0Miriam Claire interviewed Canadian abortionist Dr. Henry Morgentaler for her 2012 book\u00a0The Abortion Dilemma: Personal Views on a Public Issue<\/em><\/a>. The late Morgentaler was one of the most prolific\u00a0abortionists in Canada. \u00a0He committed many thousands abortions in his long career. He started doing abortions when it was still \u00a0illegal in Canada. \u00a0Morgentaler was one of the Western world’s biggest\u00a0promoters of abortion. \u00a0He stood trial repeatedly as an illegal abortionist, and the court decisions in his favor legalized freestanding abortion clinics across Canada.<\/p>\n

In Claire’s book, Morgentaler\u00a0defends abortion by saying<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\n

[W]hen you\u2019re not dogmatic, you have to take certain criteria into consideration.\u2026 One\u00a0of which is viability. The other major criterion is the beginning of brain waves. Both occur at around 5 \u2013 6 months. Most abortions are performed before 12 weeks of pregnancy \u2013 about 95%.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The abortionist is wrong\u00a0on two counts.<\/p>\n

According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information<\/a>, 11.5%\u00a0of all abortions in Canada are done in the second (or less often, third) trimester of pregnancy. This is more than twice as high as Morgentaler’s claim.<\/p>\n

According to the CDC, the figure in the US is 12%:<\/p>\n

Former Planned Parenthood research arm, the\u00a0Guttmacher Institute,\u00a0puts\u00a0the number at 11%.<\/p>\n

Underestimating later term\u00a0abortion numbers by over half is clearly deceptive. 6-7% may not seem like a\u00a0large\u00a0number, but considering that there are over\u00a0a million abortions\u00a0annually in both<\/a> countries combined<\/a>, the difference adds up to thousands.<\/p>\n

The second inaccuracy in Morgentaler’s quotes is his claim that brain waves begin at 5-6 months. This is far from accurate.<\/p>\n

According to the Endowment for Human Development<\/a>, a site on fetal development which takes no position on abortion, brain waves have been recorded in preborn babies at just 6 weeks and 2 days<\/a> after conception. As we have seen, the majority of abortions in both countries take place after this time. \u00a0Most abortions in the US and Canada take the lives of babies whose brains are giving off waves.<\/p>\n

The Endowment for Human Development says the following about brain development<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Between 3 and 4 weeks, the body plan emerges as the brain, spinal cord, and heart of the embryo are easily identified alongside the yolk sac.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

And<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\n

By 3 weeks the brain is dividing into 3 primary sections called the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So we see that brain development is underway very early in fetal life.<\/p>\n

Morgentaler has been caught in two falsehoods. Is it possible that he \u00a0was sincere but mistaken, or was he deliberately lying? Since\u00a0\u00a0Morgentaler was one of the world’s premier abortionists, it is extremely unlikely that Morgantaler didn’t know the true facts. It is more likely that, like so many others involved in the abortion industry, he was misleading on the truth about preborn children\u00a0for other reasons.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
