But today, Hyde is under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?c4572858\/hillary-clinton-calls-ending-hyde-amendment\" target=\"_blank\">attack<\/a> by proponents of abortion\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0like Hillary Clinton, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?c4572858\/hillary-clinton-calls-ending-hyde-amendment\" target=\"_blank\">vowed<\/a> to a Planned Parenthood audience to repeal it.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Because\u00a0African-Americans were once\u00a0the target of eugenic sterilization, Black leaders have equated government-funded programs which push birth control and abortion with Black genocide. And, like they did in the 1970s, abortion pushers who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Mlzyxz3Kzi4\" target=\"_blank\">advocate<\/a> taxpayer-funded abortion insist these programs further\u00a0&#8220;reproductive rights&#8221; for the poor. But\u00a0Planned Parenthood founder and birth control advocate Margaret Sanger believed\u00a0that the poor have the right to fewer, not more, children.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LznJjhL7bvY\" target=\"_blank\">Samuel F. Yette<\/a>\u00a0was one of the first Black journalists to work for Newsweek. In 1971, he\u00a0wrote\u00a0<em>The Choice: The Issue of Black Survival in America<\/em>, in which he described how government solutions for the poor stressed the necessity for birth control as the best means of alleviating hunger. In addition, Yette documented that mandatory abortions for unwed mothers were recommended at a 1969 White House Conference on the topic. The effort, he notes, was blocked by Black activist Fannie Lou Hamer, who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=1298&amp;dat=19691220&amp;id=QjVWAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=_OcDAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=4997,1171778&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">denounced\u00a0<\/a>abortion as &#8220;legalized murder&#8221; and called\u00a0it a plot to exterminate the Black population.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_99739\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99739\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-99739 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/YetteandChoice-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"Samuel Yette and his book The Choice (Image credit Saynsumthn blog) \" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/YetteandChoice-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/YetteandChoice.jpg 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-99739\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Samuel Yette and his book The Choice (Image credit Saynsumthn blog)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 1977, Yette condemned Black Congressional leaders who voted for federally funded abortion, comparing their action to that of the Supreme Court in the Dred Scott decision. Yette\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=2205&amp;dat=19770719&amp;id=T8QlAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=SvUFAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=1307,372395&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Like the court majority in Roe, they are forced to the position that the unborn child is not a person. Specifically, not a person subject to the equal protection of the law provided in the Fourteenth Amendment&#8230;. Roe v. Wade was a Dred Scott decision for the unborn. It is ironic in the extreme that black political leadership&#8230; sadly failing to remember that the society that condemned Dred Scott as a non-person on one side of the line used the same rationale to condemn him on the other&#8230;. As to the long-range effects of public policies favoring abortion, I believe them to be wrong.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In almost a sarcastic tone, Yette pointed out the irony in how easy it was for Blacks to obtain free abortions but not free medical care,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?id=YDQmAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=Nv4FAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=1050,1435927&amp;dq=birth+control+fannie+lou+hamer&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">writing<\/a>, &#8220;It is still a society in which an injured man must show his ability to pay before getting hospital services, but his daughter or wife can be aborted or fed birth control pills, at public expense\u2026&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 1985, Yette <a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=2211&amp;dat=19850713&amp;id=PyImAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=Tf4FAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=2636,69871&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> supporters:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Any public policy that condones, encourages, or participates in the taking of life on the pre-birth side of the womb, anticipates and works toward the policies and practices and the same rationales that destroy life on the after birth-side of the womb.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Given the history of the genocidal practices and public policies impacted on black people in the society, it is barely believable that any significant number of black people at all could condone, much less demand, public policies and financing the destruction of human life on either side of the womb.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition to Yette, Rev. Jesse Jackson ( Image taken from 1978 March for Life Program)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In a 1973 interview with Jet Magazine, Jackson <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=5bEDAAAAMBAJ&amp;pg=PA14&amp;dq=Jesse+Jackson,+abortion&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjApdjCjOHOAhXC5yYKHU-LCc4Q6AEIJzAA#v=onepage&amp;q=Jesse%20Jackson%2C%20abortion&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">called <\/a>abortion &#8220;genocide&#8221; and in 1975, Jackson <a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?id=O_ZQAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=Qb4MAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=4633,4656980&amp;dq=jesse+jackson+anti-abortion&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">endorsed<\/a> a Constitutional amendment banning abortion. Then three years after the <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> Supreme Court decision, Jackson <a href=\"http:\/\/www.criticalpast.com\/video\/65675024002_Press-Conference_Jesse-Jackson_Judith-Randal_abortion-and-health-care\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> Judith Randal of the New York Daily News, &#8220;I think that whenever Human Life ceases to represent the highest value in the human sphere, the society is in trouble\u2026\u201d The following year (1977) Jackson <a href=\"http:\/\/groups.csail.mit.edu\/mac\/users\/rauch\/nvp\/consistent\/mccarthy_jackson.html\" target=\"_blank\">endorsed<\/a> the Hyde Amendment, stating, \u201cAs a matter of conscience, I must oppose the use of federal funds for a policy of killing infants.&#8221; Sadly, Jackson <a href=\"https:\/\/saynsumthn.wordpress.com\/2011\/03\/10\/rev-jesse-jacksons-abortion-flip-flop-timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\">reversed course<\/a> on abortion when he made the decision to run for President.<\/p>\n<p>Many Black leaders\u00a0believed that\u00a0abortion affected both the preborn child and their community,\u00a0and that aborting\u00a0Black babies was antithetical to the rights they were fighting to attain. Human worth was not based on ownership, they claimed, but on the individual&#8217;s right to life. British orator Samuel Bradburn\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=HC9cAAAAQAAJ&amp;pg=PA5&amp;=PA5&amp;dq=Samuel+Bradburn,+slave,+flog,+pregnant&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=R03sFnx4F2&amp;sig=9DYdMfhSZTRD9812oCIb7HafSEM&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjMxOekiuHOAhUBSCYKHYNQBcQQ6AEIHDAA#v=onepage&amp;q=Samuel%20Bradburn%2C%20slave%2C%20flog%2C%20pregnant&amp;f=false\">graphically detailed<\/a>\u00a0this idea when he discussed\u00a0the treatment of pregnant slaves.<\/p>\n<p>In 1972, Black social activist, Erma Clardy Craven, who described herself as &#8220;a liberal Democrat,&#8221; also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.larouchepub.com\/eiw\/public\/1994\/eirv21n32-19940812\/eirv21n32-19940812_074-more_than_20_years_ago_she_expos.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">noted<\/a> the contradiction that as slaves, Black babies had value, but as free people they did not:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In times past, the Blacks couldn&#8217;t grow kids fast enough for their &#8216;masters&#8217; to harvest&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Now that power is near, the &#8216;masters&#8217; want us to call a morato\u00adrium on having babies. When looked at in context, the whole mess adds up to blatant genocide.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-99722 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Erma-Clardy-Craven-1987--197x300.png\" alt=\"Erma Clardy Craven 1987\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Erma-Clardy-Craven-1987--197x300.png 197w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Erma-Clardy-Craven-1987-.png 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 1987, before a group at the University of Toledo, Craven <a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=1350&amp;dat=19870122&amp;id=qlFPAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=IAMEAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=4871,3290129&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">accused<\/a> the United States of attempting to limit the births of Blacks through abortion. A year later, a publication\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=2211&amp;dat=19850713&amp;id=PyImAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=Tf4FAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=2636,69871&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">quoted<\/a> Craven as vowing that &#8220;As long as there is breath in me I shall fight for the right of the Black child to exist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 1992, Craven <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.baltimoresun.com\/1992-06-15\/news\/1992167070_1_women-have-abortions-genocide-craven\" target=\"_blank\">denounced<\/a>\u00a0government-funded abortion and blamed the push on the abortion industry: &#8220;The pressure on welfare women today is to have abortions. The pressure is primarily from people who are making money promoting it, primarily Planned Parenthood.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Mildred F. Jefferson, the first black woman to graduate from Harvard Medical School and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehistorymakers.com\/biography\/dr-mildred-jefferson-41\" target=\"_blank\">first woman<\/a> to be a surgical intern at Boston City Hospital, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1976\/03\/01\/archives\/abortion-in-the-campaign-methodist-surgeon-leads-the-opposition.html\" target=\"_blank\">referred<\/a> to abortion as \u201cclass war against the poor\u201d in 1976:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">People who are fewer will disappear soonest and fastest, especially people who have a background of neglect. If people think their problems result from being a minority, why should they become more minor?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_99819\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99819\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-99819\" src=\"https:\/\/www.www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Dr.-Mildred-Jefferson-1975-AP-230x300.png\" alt=\"Dr. Mildred Jefferson 1975 (Image Credit AP via the New York Times) \" width=\"230\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Dr.-Mildred-Jefferson-1975-AP-230x300.png 230w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Dr.-Mildred-Jefferson-1975-AP.png 357w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-99819\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Mildred Jefferson 1975 (Image Credit AP via the New York Times)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The distinguished <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theradiancefoundation.org\/trailblazer\/\" target=\"_blank\">Black surgeon<\/a> was also <a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=2209&amp;dat=19770621&amp;id=Z6orAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=Mv0FAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=3731,4060352&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">critical<\/a> of federally funded abortions referring to them as a &#8220;cruel trick&#8221; on the poor: &#8220;They are using the money intended to help the poor people for the purpose of getting rid of the poor and making them think they are receiving a benefit,&#8221; she said, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=1298&amp;dat=19770618&amp;id=7ORLAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=A4sDAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=6795,2340263&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">calling<\/a> the effort &#8220;the cruel use of poor people as pawns in the emotional game of those who demand abortion as socially expedient.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the Hyde Amendment was passed by Congress, Dr. Jefferson <a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=1298&amp;dat=19770618&amp;id=7ORLAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=A4sDAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=6795,2340263&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">hailed<\/a> the effort and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=1144&amp;dat=19771024&amp;id=inkqAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=8FcEAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=5449,4960140&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">suggested<\/a> that since abortionists argue that the poor should have access to abortion just like the rich, then &#8220;abortionists should make a list of the other things rich women have that they&#8217;re going to give to poor women.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-99767\" src=\"https:\/\/www.www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/mildredjefferson2_grayscale.jpg\" alt=\"mildredjefferson2_grayscale\" width=\"190\" height=\"147\" \/>In 2003, Dr. Jefferson eloquently <a href=\"http:\/\/marchforlife.org\/dr-mildred-jefferson\/\" target=\"_blank\">summed<\/a> up her belief, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I am at once a physician, a citizen and a woman, and I am not willing to stand aside and allow this concept of expendable human lives to turn this great land of ours into just another exclusive reservation where only the perfect, the privileged and the planned have the right to live.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Hyde Amendment prohibits federal funding for\u00a0abortion, and it was strongly supported by Black civil rights activists in the 1970s when it was enacted.
