{"id":99651,"date":"2016-08-27T07:21:45","date_gmt":"2016-08-27T11:21:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.www.liveactionnews.org\/?p=99651"},"modified":"2016-08-27T09:21:32","modified_gmt":"2016-08-27T13:21:32","slug":"university-new-mexico-aborted-fetal-research-gets-national-media-attention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/university-new-mexico-aborted-fetal-research-gets-national-media-attention\/","title":{"rendered":"University of New Mexico aborted fetal research gets national media attention"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>A video of the head of the Health Sciences Center at the University of New Mexico admitting the university allowed high school students to dissect fetal brains in a summer camp program has gotten the attention of a national media outlet, which may mean more mainstream coverage is imminent.<\/p>\n<p>Fox News reported this week on the <a href=\"https:\/\/energycommerce.house.gov\/sites\/republicans.energycommerce.house.gov\/files\/documents\/114\/letters\/unm-referral.pdf\">June 23 report from the House Select Panel on Infant Lives<\/a> in which it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.www.liveactionnews.org\/university-new-mexico-head-confirms-high-school-students-dissected-aborted-baby-brains\/\">referred the university to the New Mexico attorney general<\/a> for criminal charges for possibly violating New Mexico\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/law.justia.com\/codes\/new-mexico\/2013\/chapter-24\/article-6b\">Jonathan Spradling Revised Uniform Anatomical Gift Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>One of the issues on which Fox reports is the dissection of aborted fetal brains by summer camp students. The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/2016\/08\/25\/house-panel-seeks-criminal-charges-for-university-new-mexico-in-abortion-research.html\"> story notes:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Blackburn charged the school broke state laws governing the use of aborted fetal tissue it received from Southwestern Women\u2019s Options, which provides late-term abortions. Published reports said the tissue was used for research and even dissected at what has been described as summer camps in 2012 and 2014.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s likely that this story got Fox&#8217;s attention when, recently, the chancellor of the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, who is also the dean of the medical school, <a href=\"http:\/\/hsc.unm.edu\/leadership\/index.html\">Paul Roth<\/a>, admitted on video &#8212; even after being told he was being recorded &#8212; that high school students did, in fact, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.www.liveactionnews.org\/university-new-mexico-head-confirms-high-school-students-dissected-aborted-baby-brains\/\">dissect fetal brains in summer camp:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Yes, we had a faculty member who obtained some tissue, and during one of these summer workshops, uh, dissected I think one or two fetal brains.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5XqAkQ5ELBI?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/2016\/08\/25\/house-panel-seeks-criminal-charges-for-university-new-mexico-in-abortion-research.html\">Fox News Reports:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u00a0Frank Scaturro, special counsel for the U.S. House Select Panel on Infant Lives, said he would hope New Mexico takes the recommendation seriously.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cI would think if it would come from a legislative body I would think it would carry weight,\u201d says Scaturro.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A spokesman for Balderas confirm [sic] receipt of the criminal referral.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;I can confirm the Office of the Attorney General has received a public referral and this matter is under review,\u201d said James Hallinan. \u201cAll complaints received by the Office of the Attorney General are fully reviewed and appropriate action is taken.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While the report from Fox News is not new, the fact the flagship state university is now garnering the attention of national media is in indicator that this is a story that&#8217;s not going away quietly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A video of the head of the Health Sciences Center at the University of New Mexico admitting the university allowed high school students to dissect fetal brains in a summer camp program has gotten the attention of a national media outlet, which may mean more mainstream coverage is imminent.
