The Constitution is a marvelous document. Not only are important rights recognized, they’re easy to locate. Free speech? It’s in the 1st Amendment. The right to bear arms? It’s in the 2nd. If you need to kill some time, try finding a right to abortion.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll be looking a while.<\/p>\n

Nowhere does the Constitution mention abortion. Oddly, that didn’t stop Justice Harry Blackmun from declaring it a right. In Roe v. Wade’s<\/i><\/a> majority opinion, Blackmun said abortion was part of the larger \u201cright of privacy.\u201d There was just one problem: \u201cThe Constitution,\u201d Blackmun admitted, \u201cdoes not explicitly mention any right of privacy.\u201d Blackmun still managed to find one, though. He just couldn\u2019t say where<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Perhaps it was stashed \u201cin the Fourteenth Amendment\u2019s concept of personal liberty.\u201d Or maybe in \u201cthe Ninth Amendment\u2019s reservation of rights to the people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet despite not knowing exactly where to find it, Blackmun was certain this right was \u201cbroad enough to encompass a woman\u2019s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy.\u201d He went on to mention the \u201cdetriment\u201d a surprise baby can bring. I’ve gotta say, this<\/em> looks pretty detrimental to me:<\/p>\n
