{"id":99332,"date":"2016-08-18T16:50:14","date_gmt":"2016-08-18T20:50:14","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=99332"},"modified":"2016-08-31T13:55:55","modified_gmt":"2016-08-31T17:55:55","slug":"planned-parenthood-launches-new-ad-to-distract-from-abortion-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-launches-new-ad-to-distract-from-abortion-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Planned Parenthood launches new ad to distract from abortion business"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Planned Parenthood <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativereview.com\/commentary\/2016\/08\/new-planned-parenthood-ad-attempts-to-downplay-its-abortion-involvement\">has released<\/a> a new TV advertisement that attempts to further downplay its abortion services, yet it offers nothing the public doesn&#8217;t already know, no real changes to the abortion giant&#8217;s priorities, and ultimately does not change the truth of abortion&#8217;s centrality to its business.<\/p>\n<p>The spot begins with several people discussing their priorities in life such as careers and traveling, and not wanting anything to derail them just yet or cause them to &#8220;miss out on anything&#8221; &#8212; rhetoric typically associated with the &#8220;burden&#8221; of pregnancy and parenting to which abortion is billed as an antidote.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->But after a voiceover states &#8220;a lot of people go to Planned Parenthood for just one reason,&#8221; the ad subverts expectations by having people say they went for flu shots, asthma control, breast exams, and diabetes testing:<\/p>\n<p>[vimeo 177740930 w=560 h=315]<\/p>\n<p>A handful of other medical services are listed on screen, including &#8220;abortion services,&#8221; though the word &#8220;abortion&#8221; is never spoken. &#8220;There are just a lot more reasons than you think,&#8221; the ad concludes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People tend to have preconceived notions about Planned Parenthood,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adweek.com\/news\/advertising-branding\/new-planned-parenthood-ad-reminds-viewers-its-not-all-about-abortion-172997?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+adweek%2Fall-news+%28All+News%29\">said<\/a>\u00a0Sandy Rhyneer, vice president of\u00a0marketing and communications for Planned Parenthood Great Northwest and Hawaiian Islands, crediting the ad for &#8220;highlighting health care services most may not be aware we offer, while also playing to our strengths.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For years, Planned Parenthood has attempted to portray abortion as just 3% of its business. However, the 327,653 abortions it performed in its most recent fiscal year are still roughly a third of America&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnstonsarchive.net\/policy\/abortion\/graphusabrate.html\">approximately 1 million<\/a> annual abortions. Further, the 3% claim is\u00a0<a href=\"\/news\/analysis-abortion-planned-parenthoods-clinic-revenue\/\">misleading<\/a> because it <a href=\"\/news\/pph-medicaid-fraud-case-part-3-unbundling\/\">relies<\/a> on <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-abortion-rate-sale-centers\/\">unbundling<\/a> items that are part of an overall service and <a href=\"\/news\/heres-why-planned-parenthoods-3-abortion-claim-is-misleading\/\">counting them<\/a> as entirely separate services.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/liveaction.org\/petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-84611\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/NewDefundAd3.jpg\" alt=\"NewDefundAd3\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/NewDefundAd3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/NewDefundAd3-300x128.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 2013, Rachael Larimore, senior editor of the liberal, pro-abortion <em>Slate<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/xx_factor\/2013\/05\/07\/_3_percent_of_planned_parenthood_s_services_are_abortion_but_what_about.html\">admitted<\/a> that the 3% number was the &#8220;most meaningless abortion statistic ever,&#8221; noting that the abortion giant &#8220;gets at least a third of its clinic income\u2014and more than 10 percent of all its revenue, government funding included\u2014from its abortion procedures.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Notably, adoption referrals and prenatal care are not listed on screen. According to the same logic by which <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/actionfund\/docs\/annual_report_final_proof_12.16.14_\/0\">Planned Parenthood&#8217;s Annual Report<\/a> calculates its 3% abortion statistic, prenatal services constitute just 0.2% of its business, and adoption referrals a paltry 0.02%.<\/p>\n<p>Further, Planned Parenthood&#8217;s non-abortion services are a red herring as a justification for maintaining its taxpayer funding, as most defunding bills simply redirect their subsidies to other healthcare providers.
