A big part of my job involves correcting falsehoods. This one comes up a lot:<\/p>\n

Not to mention that thousands of unwanted children are given up to the foster care system just because their parents did not want them. In 2014, there were 415,129 children in the foster care system, and less than 15% of them were adopted.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

That was left under a Facebook post<\/a> telling pro-life men to \u201cshut up\u201d about abortion<\/a>. It voices a common idea: rejecting abortion means putting your child in \u201cthe system.\u201d I\u2019m going to leave aside the morality of telling foster kids they’d be better off dead and instead focus on the facts here (or lack thereof).<\/p>\n

First, most children don\u2019t enter foster care as newborns.\u00a0According to<\/a> the Department of Health and Human Services, the median age in 2014 was 6.4.<\/p>\n

And the majority of these kids weren\u2019t \u201cgiven up\u201d but taken from their parents. As for adoption, only 25\u00a0percent\u00a0were even eligible for it. On the other hand, if you\u2019re carrying a baby you\u2019re not ready to raise, plenty of people would love to get in touch.<\/p>\n

Aspiring parents actually outnumber<\/a> adoptable infants, so some have turned to websites like Adoption.com<\/a>. It permits those who\u2019ve been approved by a licensed adoption agency to create a profile explaining what they have to offer. Profiles are searchable by location, religion, family size, and other factors.<\/p>\n

The site also provides pregnancy-related<\/a> information and first-hand accounts<\/a> from women who\u2019ve been through the adoption process. Additional information about pregnancy, adoption, and material support is available at pregnancy care centers<\/a>, as well.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re choosing between abortion and adoption<\/a>, then you need to separate truth from lies; comments like the one shown above definitely fall into the later category.<\/p>\n

The truth? Adoption isn\u2019t about \u201cgiving up\u201d your baby. It\u2019s about giving life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
