Over 1 million Americans\u00a0have been protected from abortion as a result of the Hyde Amendment \u2013a rider to the federal budget that\u00a0prohibits\u00a0federal funding for\u00a0abortion through\u00a0Medicaid. Enacted in 1976 and approved by bipartisan support every year since then, the Hyde Amendment\u00a0is helping to preserve and defend the lives of low-income Americans.<\/p>\n

In its almost 40-year legacy, the Hyde Amendment has protected Americans\u00a0who now have a chance at life because of a provision almost as old as Roe v. Wade<\/em>, the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion.<\/p>\n

Pro-lifers have launched the Hello Hyde\u00a0initiative, which celebrates the many lives saved by the long-standing legislation.<\/p>\n

Gina Mallica, a spokesperson for Hello Hyde, was born through the Medicaid program to a pro-life mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cI received Medicaid care as a baby, so the Hyde Amendment is incredibly important to me,\u201d Mallica said. \u201cLow-income children deserve a chance at life, not a government-subsidized death.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stargift Thomas, who also represents the campaign, was\u00a0born in 1991 and was supported by Medicaid. Thomas says she owes her life to Hyde.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor forty years, the Hyde Amendment has affirmed that lives like mine are worth living,\u201d Thomas said.<\/p>\n

The Hello Hyde initiative is urging for the preservation of the Hyde Amendment from attacks by the abortion industry. It is also calling for the expansion of legislation to protect children in every state, as well as for babies\u00a0conceived through sexual violence.<\/p>\n

Recently, the\u00a0Democratic Party drafted a platform <\/a>that\u00a0includes language calling for the full-fledged federal funding of elective abortions.\u00a0To do this would mean the complete repeal of Hyde.<\/p>\n

Kristen Day, executive director of Democrats for Life, said the platform language alienates the Democratic Party’s pro-life constituency.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis platform\u2019s language just says [to pro-lifers] you are no longer welcome,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cThis has been the general message pro-life Democrats are receiving across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
