{"id":97582,"date":"2016-07-20T17:29:01","date_gmt":"2016-07-20T21:29:01","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=97582"},"modified":"2016-08-31T14:13:47","modified_gmt":"2016-08-31T18:13:47","slug":"biased-language-used-in-poll-claiming-millennial-support-abortion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/biased-language-used-in-poll-claiming-millennial-support-abortion\/","title":{"rendered":"Biased language used in poll claiming millennials support abortion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>A new <a href=\"http:\/\/genforwardsurvey.com\/assets\/uploads\/2016\/07\/GenForward-June-2016-Toplines-1.pdf\">GenForward and Black Youth Project poll<\/a>\u00a0appears to show that 45 percent of the millennial population supports a woman&#8217;s &#8216;right&#8217; to an abortion &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/redalertpolitics.com\/2016\/01\/14\/millennials-generation-likely-oppose-abortion\/\">which is inconsistent<\/a> with a number of other polls on the subject. A\u00a0closer look at the poll&#8217;s language may reveal the reason why it\u00a0is considered an outlier, and therefore, unreliable.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Adults ages 18-30 were given four response options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cBy law, abortion should never be permitted\u201d (13 percent supported)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe law should permit abortion only in case of rape, incest, or when the woman\u2019s life is in danger\u201d (23 percent\u00a0supported)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe law should permit abortion for reasons other than rape, incest, or danger to the woman\u2019s life, but only after the need for the abortion has been clearly established\u201d (13 percent\u00a0supported)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBy law, a woman should always be able to obtain an abortion as a matter of personal choice\u201d (45 percent\u00a0supported)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While this poll&#8217;s\u00a013 percent reported millennial opposition to any kind of abortion is consistent with other polls, the\u00a0third option is confusing\u00a0in that it\u00a0does not define what &#8220;the need for the abortion&#8221; may involve.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/AbortionProcedures.com\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-88619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN.jpg\" alt=\"levatino-ad-LAN\" width=\"306\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN.jpg 306w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The idea of a &#8220;need&#8221; is\u00a0often highly subjective. This usage of the term is similar to the way\u00a0&#8220;health&#8221; was used in the landmark case of\u00a0<em>Doe v. Bolton, <\/em>a companion to <em>Roe v. Wade <\/em>which legalized abortion nationwide in 1973. What <em>Doe<\/em> did was offer an exception for limiting late-term abortions for the &#8220;health&#8221; of the mother. &#8220;Health&#8221; is so broadly defined that it could mean anything that the woman and her\u00a0abortionist decide &#8212;\u00a0regardless of how far along she\u00a0is in her pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0fourth\u00a0option also carries with it the issue of biased language, particularly when it comes to the phrase, &#8220;as a matter of personal choice.&#8221; This phrase dresses up abortion as if ending another human life is a choice\u00a0just like any other&#8230; an obvious pro-abortion slant.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from all of this, the 45 percent figure is an outlier.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0Knights of Columbus\/Marist poll, released in January,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/redalertpolitics.com\/2016\/01\/19\/pro-life-generation-76-millennials-support-abortion-limits\/\">included breakdowns<\/a> by generation. Only 13 percent of millennials polled said that &#8220;Abortion should be available to a woman any time she wants one during her pregnancy.&#8221; This option is worded most closely\u00a0to the option chosen by 45 percent polled by\u00a0GenForward.<\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"\/news\/new-poll-finds-that-millennials-oppose-abortion-even-when-they-call-themselves-pro-choice\/\">poll<\/a>, this one from\u00a0Students for Life of America, similarly <a href=\"http:\/\/redalertpolitics.com\/2016\/06\/30\/poll-17-millennials-agree-clinton-abortion\/\">found<\/a> that just 17 percent of millennials believe abortion should be legal &#8220;at any time, for any reason.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Neither question carries the biased language included in the GenForward poll.<\/p>\n<p>When accounting for each single option in the GenForward poll, the 45 percent is an overwhelming plurality. But when the three other options are added up together as pro-life positions &#8212; or those which at least favor some abortion restrictions\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0the total is 49 percent in favor of restricting abortion. Even with a suspect poll, close to half of those 18-30 are either pro-life in their convictions or at the very least support certain restrictions on abortion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/liveaction.org\/petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68636\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/DefundAd-400b.jpg\" alt=\"DefundAd-400b\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/DefundAd-400b.jpg 400w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/DefundAd-400b-300x128.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>GenForward poll questions about Planned Parenthood, a leading abortion chain in both\u00a0the <a href=\"\/news\/united-states-planned-parenthood-world-leaders-performing-abortions\/\">nation and the world<\/a>, also show pro-abortion bias.\u00a0\u201cWould you favor or oppose totally eliminating federal funding to Planned Parenthood for family planning and preventive services?\u201d the survey asked.\u00a0A majority strongly opposed (47 percent) or somewhat opposed (20 percent) eliminating funding. Only 15 percent strongly supported ending funding and another 17 percent somewhat supported the option.<\/p>\n<p>The language of the question\u00a0emphasizes Planned Parenthood&#8217;s\u00a0&#8220;family planning and preventive services,&#8221; which <a href=\"\/news\/will-poor-women-go-health-care-defund-planned-parenthood-everywhere\/\">people can\u00a0get<\/a> from federally qualified health centers and community centers. (In fact, FQHCs outnumber Planned Parenthoods more than 13 to 1.) And\u00a0<a href=\"\/news\/abortion-inc-new-report-shows-how-planned-parenthood-used-taxpayer-dollars-to-become-the-abortion-giant\/\">Planned Parenthood&#8217;s preventive services<\/a>\u00a0continue to decrease, even <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-health-care-services-declined-in-2014-while-taxpayer-funding-increased\/\">while their taxpayer dollars<\/a> increase.\u00a0<a href=\"\/news\/breaking-congress-votes-defund-planned-parenthood\/\">Eliminating federal funding<\/a> of Planned Parenthood would direct the funds instead to FHQCs, which do not provide abortions. The poll did not mention that Planned Parenthood commits more abortions than any other organization in the United States &#8212; more than 320,000 every year.<\/p>\n<p>This poll is another example of why we can&#8217;t take everything at face value when it comes to public opinion on abortion.
