The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) doesn\u2019t have a great image: members get stereotyped as bigots who wear creepy costumes and start fires. In 2015, photographer Peter van Agtmael visited some KKK events. Did he find the Klan to be far more nuanced and diverse than the public assumes?<\/p>\n

Nope<\/a>. Apparently some stereotypes are legit.<\/p>\n

The photos show burning crosses, a noose, and people dressed in robes (there\u2019s a dog dressed in them too). One features a poster of Holocaust victim Anne Frank that reads, \u201cHide and Seek World Champion 1942-1944.\u201d After seeing these folks, you might ask yourself, \u201cWho would ever want to be around them?\u201d<\/p>\n

Planned Parenthood\u2019s founder did.<\/p>\n

Planned Parenthood is America\u2019s largest abortion chain<\/a>, and it named an award<\/a> after its founder, Margaret Sanger. What did Sanger stand for? Well, she supported<\/a> \u201cdrastic immigration laws\u201d to promote \u201crace betterment.\u201d She also spoke at a KKK meeting, something she recounted on page 366 of her autobiography<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The speech must have been well received as \u201ca dozen invitations to speak to similar groups\u201d followed. The KKK had spent decades inflicting violence, but that didn\u2019t dissuade Sanger. To her, \u201cany aroused group was a good group.\u201d The organization she started is ready to work with racists too: in 2008, Planned Parenthood officials agreed to take donations from people wanting to see black children aborted<\/a>.<\/p>\n
