{"id":97192,"date":"2016-07-05T10:09:51","date_gmt":"2016-07-05T14:09:51","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=97192"},"modified":"2016-07-05T11:02:29","modified_gmt":"2016-07-05T15:02:29","slug":"mexico-supreme-court-rejects-legalizing-abortion-nationwide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mexico-supreme-court-rejects-legalizing-abortion-nationwide\/","title":{"rendered":"Mexico&#8217;s Supreme Court rejects legalizing abortion nationwide"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The Mexican Supreme Court&#8217;s First Chamber <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/mexican-supreme-court-overwhelmingly-rejects-proposal-to-legalize-abortion\">has voted<\/a> 3-1 against mandating first-trimester abortion-on-demand throughout Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>In Mexico City, abortion is legal for any reason in the first trimester, but restricted later in pregnancy. A proposed draft decision by Supreme Court Justice Arturo Zald\u00edvar Lelo de Larrea would have extended that policy to all of the country&#8217;s 31 states.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->It stemmed from a 2013 case in which a mother sought an abortion after her child was diagnosed with <a href=\"https:\/\/ghr.nlm.nih.gov\/condition\/klinefelter-syndrome\">Klinefelter Syndrome<\/a>, which is non-fatal. The woman eventually aborted at a private clinic rather than the government one from which she originally sought the abortion, but still argued the government&#8217;s denial violated her &#8220;human rights.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Zald\u00edvar argued Mexico had to provide women with \u201caccessible and affordable\u201d abortion services to ensure their right to \u201cfree development of personality.\u201d His draft verdict also cited <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Now that the court has rejected his draft, another justice will be tasked with writing another draft decision for the court&#8217;s review.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, Mexico&#8217;s Supreme Court also <a href=\"\/news\/mexican-supreme-court-upholds-personhood-amendments\/\">upheld<\/a> state personhood amendments. However, while Mexico&#8217;s laws are more pro-life than those of the United States in some respects, Texas abortionists have also been known to <a href=\"\/news\/tx-abortionist-sends-patients-to-mexico-for-dangerous-abortion-drug\/\">send patients across the border<\/a>, where they can obtain abortion drugs without prescriptions or proper dosage information.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Mexican Supreme Court&#8217;s First Chamber has voted 3-1 against mandating first-trimester abortion-on-demand throughout Mexico.
