That <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=16160&amp;LangID=E\">didn\u2019t sit well<\/a> with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, Juan E. M\u00e9ndez. According to him, \u201cThe death penalty does not show respect for life, in fact it does the opposite.\u201d As you can see,\u00a0 M\u00e9ndez is passionate about defending the right to life&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;for murderers. Children in the womb? Not so much.<\/p>\n<p>In April, M\u00e9ndez <a href=\"\/news\/un-official-says-pro-life-laws-are-torture-the-facts-say-otherwise\/\">released a report<\/a> stating that pro-life laws constitute \u201ctorture.\u201d He said they\u2019re based on \u201chumiliating and judgmental attitudes\u201d while inflicting \u201ctremendous and lasting\u201d damage on women.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The evidence from Poland, Ireland, and Malta doesn\u2019t back up that assessment: not only does each have strict abortion laws, <a href=\"http:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/SH.STA.MMRT\">all three<\/a> also have better maternal mortality figures than the US. Mexico\u2019s and Chile\u2019s experience doesn\u2019t support it either, as Mexican states with permissive abortion laws actually have <a href=\"http:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/5\/2\/e006013.full\"><i>higher<\/i><\/a> mortality rates while Chile\u2019s <span class=\"UFICommentBody\"><a title=\"The Epidemiology of Abortion and Its Prevention in Chile\" href=\"http:\/\/www.melisainstitute.org\/uploads\/1\/2\/3\/9\/12398427\/koch_2015_ilm_article.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">continued to fall<\/a><\/span> after pro-life laws were enacted.<\/p>\n<p>That an anti-torture advocate would be pushing for abortion seems especially strange when you see what it can involve.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Anthony Levatino is an obstetrician-gynecologist who\u2019s performed over 1,200 abortions. In the video below, he explains how a second trimester abortion procedure called dilation and evacuation (D&amp;E) is performed.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jgw4X7Dw_3k\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">After the amniotic fluid is removed, the abortionist uses a sopher clamp \u2014 a grasping instrument with rows of sharp \u201cteeth\u201d \u2014 to grasp and pull the baby\u2019s arms and legs, tearing the limbs from the child\u2019s body.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The abortionist continues to grasp intestines, spine, heart, lungs, and any other limbs or body parts. The most difficult part of the procedure is usually finding, grasping and crushing the baby\u2019s head.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">After removing pieces of the child\u2019s skull, the abortionist uses a curette to scrape the uterus and remove the placenta and any remaining parts of the baby.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr. Kawaljeet Anand is a professor of pediatrics, anesthesiology and neurobiology at the University of Tennessee, and his research indicates a baby can feel that happening. Regarding another abortion technique known as dilation and extraction (D&amp;X), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/02\/10\/magazine\/10Fetal-t.html?_r=0\">Anand said<\/a>, \u201cIf the fetus is beyond 20 weeks of gestation, I would assume that there will be pain caused to the fetus. And I believe it will be severe and excruciating pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By the way, if you think Dr. Levatino undermines his credibility by saying \u201cbaby\u201d instead of \u201cfetus,\u201d then you should probably talk to Dr. Savita Ginde. Dr. Ginde is the medical director for Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains and <i>she<\/i> had no problem calling a fetus a baby. <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-doctor-called-fetus-baby-killed\/\">Right after she aborted him<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GWQuZMvcFA8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You can help show life isn\u2019t \u201cdispensable\u201d by <a href=\"\/news\/south-carolina-gov-nikki-haley-signs-20-week-abortion-ban\/\">supporting legislation<\/a> to protect pain-capable children. You can also remind the presidential candidates how much <a href=\"\/news\/naral-says-senators-should-do-their-job-i-agree\/\">Supreme Court appointments<\/a> matter.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/plannedparenthoodexposed.com\/\">tell Congress<\/a> to redirect over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/2013\/01\/08\/planned-parenthood-receives-record-amount-taxpayer-support\/\">half a billion<\/a> dollars in funding from Planned Parenthood (America\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2015\/jan\/1\/planned-parenthood-327k-abortions-fiscal-2014\/\">largest abortion chain<\/a>) to <a href=\"http:\/\/getyourcare.org\/\">federally qualified health centers<\/a> (FQHC) and <a href=\"\/news\/new-website-shows-women-have-more-choices-besides-planned-parenthood-for-low-cost-health-care\/\">community health centers<\/a> (CHCs) instead. Not only would that show \u201crespect for life,\u201d but it would provide <a href=\"http:\/\/getyourcare.org\/\">more accessible care<\/a> to those in need.<\/p>\n<p>Capital punishment is a controversial subject, but when someone says convicted terrorists deserve more rights than children, it\u2019s tough to take him seriously.
