She claims that the recently-enacted law requiring fetal development education and public awareness amounts to \u201cSiphoning Money From Schools and Pouring It Into an Anti-Abortion Curriculum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->While the bill\u2019s express goal is \u201cachieving an abortion-free society,\u201d the fact remains that the actual content to be taught is nothing more than objective biological facts which are confirmed by <a href=\"\/news\/40-quotes-from-medical-experts-that-prove-human-life-begins-at-conception\/\">dozens of mainstream, non-political scientific textbooks, organizations, and experts<\/a>, rooted in <a href=\"\/news\/the-science-of-abortion-when-does-life-begin\/\">settled, unambiguous criteria<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abort73.com\/abortion\/medical_testimony\/\">admitted by numerous leading pro-abortion thinkers and leaders<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Note that nowhere does the author even attempt to identify how these facts\u2014which, in a sane society, would already be standard in every human biology course\u2014might be false or misleading. If accurately teaching the science of a subject is intrinsically \u201canti\u201d that subject, then maybe the lesson isn\u2019t where the problem lies.<\/p>\n<p>Having tacitly forfeited the only substantive charge that would really matter, Caplan-Bricker instead tries to raise a variety of peripheral objections, with predictable results:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Critics have already raised concerns about what subjects might suffer to make room in the school day for anti-abortion propagandizing. \u201cAdding yet another mandate on [teachers] and forcing them to have those very emotional and political conversations with young people just takes away instructional time from other areas,\u201d Democratic State Representative Emily Virgin said, according to the World.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Where to fit it in? Is \u201cin biology class\u201d not self-evident? The idea that something so basic from a core educational subject would be out of place or detract from anything else is absurd, but not as absurd as suggesting that teaching the facts of fetal development is automatically \u201cemotional and political.\u201d Again, if sharing information raises politically inconvenient questions, it isn\u2019t the information\u2019s fault, but the fault of those who\u2019ve spent so long denying that information in service of a political agenda.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/AbortionProcedures.com\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-88619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN.jpg\" alt=\"levatino-ad-LAN\" width=\"306\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN.jpg 306w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Oklahoma has a $1.3 billion budget deficit, and that weight is falling heaviest upon its struggling school system: Reuters recently reported that Oklahoma\u2019s $3 billion education budget had been cut by $58 million since January. Though the law technically establishes a \u201cPublic Education on the Humanity of the Unborn Child Fund\u201d\u2014\u201ca continuing fund, not subject to fiscal year limitations\u201d\u2014to pay for the high school programs, it\u2019s not at all clear where the money [an estimated $4.78 million] will come from to fill it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, for starters, there are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocpaimpact.com\/ocpa-impact-offers-updated-plan-for-oklahoma-teacher-pay-raise-with-no-tax-increases\">estimates<\/a> that Oklahoma has $753 million in wasteful spending that could cover the cost more than 150 times over. It\u2019s also worth noting that most folks of Nora Caplan-Bricker\u2019s political persuasion consider anti-bullying programs an important addition to public schools regardless of their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2014\/03\/20\/anti-bullying-programs-may-give-boost-to-bullies\/6653995\/\">million-dollar price tags<\/a>, because teaching the next generation to treat each other decently is worth it. Well, treating people decently starts in the womb, with the victims least capable of fighting back.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Of course, while Oklahoma\u2019s methods for \u201cachieving an abortion-free society\u201d have a totalitarian tinge [\u2026]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Teaching basic biology is totalitarian now? Really? That\u2019s doubly funny considering that there are quite a few environmental leaders who <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.com\/archives\/2016\/06\/07\/the-transparency-bullies\">openly talk about<\/a> <em>throwing people in jail<\/em> for expressing skepticism about global warming, yet if that sounds totalitarian to Caplan-Bricker, she <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=climate%20from%3Ancaplanbricker&amp;src=typd\">doesn&#8217;t seem to have mentioned it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">[T]he goal of creating a society in which abortion happens infrequently makes total sense. That\u2019s why, during debates over the bill, Democrats advocated supplementing it with strategies that might actually work. As reported by Rewire, Rep. Virgin suggested an amendment that would include comprehensive sex education, and another Democrat, Rep. Jason Dunnington, wrote an amendment to \u201cprovide family planning services, including all forms of contraceptives.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sigh. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/329898\/new-study-exaggerates-benefits-no-cost-contraception-michael-j-new\">No<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/blogs\/tell-me-that-good-one-again-about-how-contraception-decreases-abortions\">matter<\/a> <a href=\"\/news\/guttmacher-doctored-data-boost-planned-parenthoods-contraception-push\/\">how<\/a> <a href=\"\/news\/debunking-the-atlantics-flawed-case-for-school-contraception-distribution\/\">many<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/badcatholic\/2012\/11\/does-contraception-reduce-the-abortion-rate.html\">times<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abort73.com\/abortion_facts\/birth_control_and_abortion\/\">pro-lifers<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2015\/08\/18\/does-contraception-really-prevent-abortions\/\">debunk<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/top-everything-else-contraception-mandates-dont-work\/\">this<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/new-study-links-contraception-hike-with-increased-abortions\">meme<\/a>, it just never seems to phase them. It sure would be nice if abortion advocates could stay on-topic for at least one debate before trying to shoehorn in their pet causes.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It\u2019s long been said that Republicans\u2019 passion for the unborn doesn\u2019t extend past delivery. In Oklahoma, conservatives believe the rights of fetuses should commandeer valuable class-time and over-subscribed state dollars, regardless of the costs to actual children.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cActual children.\u201d As opposed to the children in the womb, who are apparently fake children despite really being there, really being alive, and really being human?<\/p>\n<p>Thank you, Nora Caplan-Bricker, for closing your attack on Oklahoma\u2019s new law with a display of ignorance that actually shows why every state needs educational reforms just like it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At Slate, Nora Caplan-Bricker is not happy that Oklahoma intends to teach public school students that human life begins at fertilization &#8212;\u00a0not happy at all.
