Last week the United Nation Human Rights Committee called<\/a> Ireland \u201ccruel\u201d for its ban on abortion, and now Amnesty International has joined<\/a> in the condemnation.<\/p>\n

AI Irish affiliate head Colm O\u2019Gorman said that the \u201cIrish government must take its head out of the sand and see that it has to tackle this issue,\u201d going so far as to call Ireland a \u201crogue nation\u201d for protecting preborn babies.<\/p>\n

Cora Sherlock from the Pro-Life Campaign of Ireland blasted O\u2019Gorman\u2019s remarks as \u201cshow[ing] a complete lack of understanding of genuine human rights,\u201d noting that hyperbolic rhetoric like \u201crogue nation\u201d categorizes Ireland alongside practitioners of genocide.<\/p>\n

Ireland has come under fire for its refusal to allow abortion for any reason except to save a mother\u2019s life from a physical threat. However, unmentioned by the critics is the fact that Ireland\u2019s maternal mortality rate<\/a> is lower than that of the United Kingdom, Canada, France, the United States, and Germany.<\/p>\n

Further, Sherlock notes that Amnesty International is not simply calling on Ireland to permit abortion for extreme exceptions, but to legalize abortion in all cases. In the past, the group has called for<\/a> \u201cthe removal of all criminal penalties (including imprisonment, fines, and other punishments) against those seeking, obtaining, providing information about, or carrying out abortions,\u201d including for partial-birth abortion.<\/p>\n

Despite its reputation as a \u201chuman rights\u201d organization, Amnesty International\u2019s extreme pro-abortion position includes calling<\/a> abortion bans without rape exceptions \u201ctantamount to torture\u201d and defending<\/a> the horrific dilation and evacuation abortion procedure, better known as dismemberment abortions for tearing apart<\/a> a three-month-old fetus limb by limb.<\/p>\n
