The Keepers of the Official Abortion Narrative hold that absolutely nobody likes abortion, that every single woman who gets one would of course rather avoid it if she could. But try as they might, they<\/a> just<\/a> can’t<\/a> seem<\/a> to<\/a> stop<\/a> the occasional pro-abortion extremist from cheering abortion as a positive good that deserves to be used casually.<\/p>\n

\"Natasha<\/a>The latest to miss the memo is actress and comedian Natasha Leggero, who recently appeared<\/a> on Conan O\u2019Brien\u2019s talk show to gush about how \u201ccool\u201d abortion is, to the point where even Conan was taken aback and occasionally tried to veer her back on script.<\/p>\n

It came amid a discussion of her conversion away from \u201cmean\u201d Catholicism to Judaism, which she interprets to be much more welcoming of abortion…<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cYou\u2019re part of this beautiful religion seeped in culture,\u201d she gushed about her new religion, before adding, \u201cAbortions are cool.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the audience laughed, Conan disagreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think they go around saying \u2018abortions are cool,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cNot like the Fonz\u201d (a famously \u201ccool\u201d character from Happy Days).<\/p>\n

His sidekick, Andy Richter, prompted even more laughter by commenting, \u201cThat\u2019s on the PSA, \u2018Judaism: Abortion is cool.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Trying to regain control of the abortion conversation, Conan again started to say no one called abortion \u201ccool,\u201d when Leggero interrupted, \u201cNo, they do!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, you could get an abortion on every Jewish holiday and it would be okay,\u201d she hyped.<\/p>\n

But when Leggero likened abortion to a contract with a towing company, the audience changed its tune towards her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m not saying I am going to get an abortion but, you know, it\u2019s just nice to \u2013 it\u2019s like AAA. Like, you’re not going to use all those tows, but \u2013 no, it\u2019s just nice to know \u2013\u201d she stumbled as some in the audience booed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Yes, killing a child is exactly like getting your car towed. The Catholics are the nutcases for noticing the second person who dies as a result of Mom\u2019s actions, while those who pretend the kid isn\u2019t there are the reasonable ones. Now where could anyone get the crazy idea that abortion advocates\u00a0are narcissists?<\/p>\n

As actual<\/em> crazy notions go, Leggero\u2019s claim that Judaism is inherently pro-abortion takes the cake. There is disturbing survey data<\/a> indicating that contemporary American Jews are as a whole more pro-abortion than other faiths, but religions are defined by the tenets of the religions themselves, not the fidelity of their\u00a0followers many centuries later. The Jewish Pro-Life Foundation argues<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\n

The Halakhic record on the subject of abortion coalesced around a central theme of sanctifying unborn human life, permitting abortion only when the mother\u2019s physical life was in imminent danger during hard labor. While acknowledging the unborn child\u2019s value, the mother\u2019s life took precedence, and abortion in this extreme case was permitted. In the absence of modern day surgical procedures that allow both mother and baby to survive a breech birth, the pragmatic rabbis of the time allowed this one exception to the laws prohibiting abortion. Cesarean delivery and high tech medical care for premature infants have invalidated this exception to the prohibition against abortion. Today, ectopic pregnancy is the only allowable exception.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\"levatino-ad-LAN\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Rabbi David Novak adds<\/a> that \u201cwithin the normative Jewish tradition, there is no permission of elective abortion based on a woman’s \u2018right\u2019 to do with her own body as she (or anyone else) pleases,\u201d and has this to say about modern pro-abortion Jewish sentiment:<\/p>\n

\n

Admittedly, this outlook contravenes the emotional inclinations and political opinions of many Jews today, especially American Jewish liberals. But in traditional Judaism the Torah takes precedence, irrespective of how few Jews accept its teachings, whether on a specific issue or in general. In the case of abortion, there is little doubt that the inclinations and opinions of may Jews have been strongly influenced by the secular culture in which they live. On the question of abortion, especially, traditional Judaism is countercultural.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

There are, of course, pro-abortion interpretations of Jewish teaching<\/a>, but they seem to be based in a number of the same errors that we see all the time from pro-abortion spins on Christianity: assuming personhood is bestowed at some point after fertilization similarly to how some early Catholics used the \u201cquickening\u201d standard in the absence of a clearer scientific view of embryology; and drawing questionable interpretations and inferences<\/a> from various passages of the Bible.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, for Christians and Jews alike, abortion should come down to two basic truths: that both faiths view<\/a> murder as a grievous sin, because<\/a> \u201cfor in the image of God has God made mankind\u201d; and that modern science<\/a> unarguably concludes<\/a> that human zygotes, embryos, and fetuses are members of mankind.<\/p>\n

As sickening as Natasha Leggero\u2019s callous hyping of abortion is, pro-lifers can find hope in some of the reactions from the audience and even Conan O’Brien himself, as they show that people outside the pro-life movement are still capable of being shocked at the true face of abortion-on-demand.<\/p>\n

Realizing we weren\u2019t exaggerating after all may yet be the first step toward joining us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
