There\u2019s so much pro-abortion propaganda cluttering the web that try as we might, sometimes something slips through the cracks. But there\u2019s no statute of limitations on truth, so today we\u2019re going to talk about a \u201cstudy\u201d released last year (helpfully sent my way by Live Action News commenter PJ4) that claims \u201cpro-lifers are sexist\u201d isn\u2019t just a malicious pro-abortion clich\u00e9; it\u2019s science<\/em>!<\/p>\n

Spoiler alert: it\u2019s not science.<\/p>\n

The study, by Professor N. Eugene Walls and PhD candidate Stephanie Begun and published in the May 2015 issue of Affilia: Journal of Women and Social Work<\/em>, took a sample 651 undergraduate students (70% female, 30% male), and purports to show a correlation between pro-life views and agreement with sexist statements.<\/p>\n

According to<\/a> Nina Bahadur at the Huffington Post:<\/p>\n

Participants were asked how much they agreed with \u201cbenevolent\u201d sexist statements like \u201cin a disaster, women ought to be rescued before men\u201d and \u201ca good woman should be set on a pedestal by her man,\u201d as well as hostile sexist statements like \u201cwomen are too easily offended\u201d and \u201cfeminists are seeking for women to have more power over men.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe results showed that as people increasingly endorsed hostile sexist views, they were statistically significantly more likely to hold anti-choice abortion attitudes,\u201d Begun told The Huffington Post. \u201cThe same was true for people who endorse benevolent sexist views of women \u2014 and to the exact same degree as those who endorsed hostile sexist views.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Unfortunately for the \u201cyou only oppose abortion because you look down on women\u201d theory, multiple holes are immediately apparent.<\/p>\n

First, 651 people is a small enough sample size, and it becomes even smaller when you realize a paltry 195 of them are men\u2014y\u2019know, the sex that\u2019s supposedly doing the oppressing. Rather than try to explain why the female 70% would be, er, sexist against themselves, Bahadur simply dismisses the fact that the results \u201cheld true across gender lines\u201d with a single line about \u201chow nuanced sexism can be\u201d\u2014\u201cnuance\u201d in this context being code for \u201cjust go with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then again, I suppose accusing pro-life women of hating themselves is a step up from pretending they don’t exist<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Second, the examples of sexist statements say less about the respondents and more about the radicalism of the researchers. \u201cWomen are too easily offended\u201d is of course an unfair generalization, but \u201cfeminists are seeking for women to have more power over men\u201d is a comment on a modern-day political movement\u2014not a reference to women, and not even to the original feminists<\/a>, who were pro-life and therefore sexist according to the study\u2019s logic. So even if \u201cfeminists want to dominate men\u201d was erroneous, it wouldn\u2019t be sexism.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s not wrong\u2014the pro-abortion dogma that passes for \u201cfeminism\u201d today often does cast men as the enemy, framing abortion \u201crights\u2019 as a stand against \u201cpatriarchy<\/a>,\u201d denigrating pro-life men as people who would turn pro-choice in a heartbeat if we could get pregnant<\/a>, hysterically denigrating<\/a> fathers\u2019 right to grieve over children they\u2019ve lost to abortion, proposing to legislate<\/a> male medical decisions that actually<\/em> affect nothing but their own bodies, etc.<\/p>\n

The above examples of \u201cbenevolent sexism\u201d are particularly ridiculous. Instead, these statements are what saner generations would classify as chivalry. But don\u2019t take my male, patriarchal, privileged word for it\u2014take Independent Women\u2019s Forum executive director Sabrina Schaeffer, writing at the Federalist<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\n

Certainly few want to return to an age when gender roles were excessively rigid, but feminists have gone to extremes and encouraged a culture that undermines healthy gender relationships. Men who hold doors are now viewed as part of the patriarchal society. And girls are expected to just \u201cbe one of the guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

But gender roles helped men and women and in times past allowed the sexes to better navigate the sometimes-rough waters of romance, courtship, marriage, and sex. Feminists view the chivalry and social mores of previous generations as anachronistic. But the reality is these traditional customs of giving up a seat for a woman on a train, or accompanying a woman in public, weren\u2019t all rooted in sexism. They were social structures to help make men more respectful of women and to curb this kind of inappropriate behavior.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Finally, the ultimate test of the pro-life movement\u2019s character is the same as it has always been: we\u2019re right<\/em>. \u201cAbortion kills living human beings\u201d is scientifically<\/a>, objectively<\/a> true. Our accusations against the abortion industry for its crimes<\/a> and offenses<\/a> against women are substantiated by the public record. We have been proven to be telling the truth<\/a> in every major dispute with the abortion lobby. We demonstrate our true respect and compassion for women<\/a> every day.<\/p>\n

Even if every single messenger against abortion really was a sexist pig, it wouldn\u2019t change the truth of the message\u2026but if people are advocating a position that is factually and logically correct, Occam’s razor<\/a> dictates that the position\u2019s inherent merit is a more likely explanation for their advocacy than some ulterior motive like sexism.<\/p>\n

Conversely, because pro-aborts spend so little time confronting pro-life arguments head on and instead endlessly attribute increasingly malicious and outlandish ulterior motives on us, we can reasonably infer that they are desperate to change the subject because they know, on some level, they aren\u2019t<\/em> right.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
