Mickey, whose excited reaction\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/humankind\/2016\/05\/23\/teen-down-syndromes-sweet-reaction-college-acceptance-letter\/84770370\/\">was captured<\/a>\u00a0in a video shared by \u201cHumanKind\u201d for\u00a0USA Today<i>,\u00a0<\/i>has Down syndrome.\u00a0Mickey read her acceptance letter aloud while her mother, Jenny, and father and brother, Michael and Brad, watched. She paused after reading \u201cwe want to congratulate you on your,\u201d and after prompting from her mother, excitedly finished with \u201cacceptance into our program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>That program is the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssjcs.k12.in.us\/Page\/583\">INSPIRE program<\/a>\u00a0at Franklin College, which is designed for students with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"USA TODAY - Embed Player\" src=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/videos\/embed\/84770376\/?fullsite=true\" width=\"540\" height=\"304\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Mickey shared with USA Today that she is \u201cmost excited to get to experience the college life because I never thought I would ever be able to.&#8221; She\u2019s also excited about \u201cmaking college friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mickey&#8217;s\u00a0good news\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/redalertpolitics.com\/2016\/04\/04\/teen-syndrome-getting-college-goes-viral-video\/\">is similar<\/a>\u00a0to that received by Rachel Grace in March, who also has Down\u00a0syndrome\u00a0and\u00a0was accepted into the CILLS program at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>Mickey\u00a0has career plans to become a dance teacher for children with special needs. And she has inspired\u00a0in other ways, as\u00a0an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/2016\/01\/27\/mickeydeputy\/79402932\/\">Indianapolis pageant star<\/a>, with IndyStar following her campaign to become the first Miss America with Down syndrome. While she didn\u2019t win, Governor Mike Pence\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/picture-gallery\/life\/2016\/04\/11\/mickey-deputy-awarded-sagamore-of-the-wabash\/82904390\/?from=global&amp;sessionKey=&amp;autologin=\">awarded her<\/a>\u00a0the Sagamore of the Wabash, a high civilian honor in Indiana.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/AbortionProcedures.com\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-88619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN.jpg\" alt=\"levatino-ad-LAN\" width=\"306\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN.jpg 306w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Governor Pence has stood by\u00a0those with Down syndrome in other ways as well, by <a href=\"\/news\/indiana-becomes-the-second-state-to-ban-down-syndrome-abortions\/\">signing a bill into law<\/a>\u00a0in March, prohibit abortion based on fetal abnormalities. But not all were happy that Pence made Indiana the second state to\u00a0outlaw abortion based on fetal disability.\u00a0Mere weeks later, Planned Parenthood and the ACLU <a href=\"\/news\/aclu-sues-indiana-over-fetal-abnormalities-abortion-ban\/\">sued Indiana<\/a> over the law. Abortion advocates also turned to the absurd and vulgar\u00a0to show their pleasure, through a <a href=\"\/news\/absurd-periods-for-pence-launched-protest-indiana-abortion-law\/\">&#8220;Periods for Pence&#8221;<\/a> campaign. The <a href=\"\/news\/abortion-advocates-cry-torture-over-indiana-ban-on-aborting-disabled-babies\/\">mainstream media<\/a> decried the new law as well, disregarding the lives of babies who would be saved from death by abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, we have the privilege of witnessing persons with Down syndrome,\u00a0like Mickey and Rachel,\u00a0who are inspiring those around them by defying the limits that some in society would set for them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While debate rages about aborting those diagnosed with Down syndrome in utero, those who are living with it continue to inspire in all sorts of ways.
