Sarah Silverman, the alleged comedian who thinks<\/a> prenatal human beings are \u201cgoo\u201d and defends Planned Parenthood with literally the same arguments<\/a> Nazi scientists made to justify experimenting on Jews, is at it again.<\/p>\n

During a performance over the weekend, she proposed<\/a> a novel (and by \u201cnovel,\u201d I mean \u201ccopied<\/a> from<\/a> every<\/a> ignorant pro-abort trying too hard to be clever\u201d) idea to illustrate how invasive and unreasonable pro-life legislation supposedly is\u2026in her characteristically vulgar style, of course.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cHere\u2019s something that I learned that is fascinating, and it\u2019s this: Scientists have found that sperms cells smell,\u201d Silverman said during her set. \u201cLike I know sperm smells, but sperm cells have the sense of smell, and you know what that means: Sperm is life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you know what that means,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ve gotta legislate that shit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we\u2019ll do is \u2014 it\u2019s a real simple procedure. We take a really long needle-like basically GoPro camera and we put it down your penis hole, urethra, then down into your testicular sack,\u201d Silverman continued. \u201cWe\u2019re going to show you the ultrasound, so you can see the life in your balls.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It turns out Silverman oversold the \u201csperm can smell\u201d thing, according to<\/a> pro-abortion Silverman fan Maxwell Strachan at the Huffington Post<\/em>:<\/p>\n

\n

We liked this idea, so we checked out the science of smelling sperm, and there are studies<\/a>\u00a0going back at least to 1992 on the issue<\/a>. Unfortunately, one article from 2012 out of the Max Planck Society appears to throw some cold water on the idea that sperm cells can actually smell<\/a>\u00a0outside of the laboratory[.]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Indeed, a look at that final article reveals that the theory was never even that sperm were living organisms, but simply that they might \u201cfunction like olfactory cells\u201d in order to fertilize an egg by following a scent trail. Of course, being HuffPo, Silverman\u2019s entire premise being wrong isn\u2019t a problem for Strachan, who concludes, \u201clet\u2019s just keep that between us, shall we? This idea is too good to pass up.\u201d<\/p>\n

With that out of the way, it seems we need a refresher on the mind-numbing ignorance of equating sperm cells with embryos. The only sense in which the former are alive or human is that they are comprised of organic matter and that their DNA identifies them as coming from the human species\u2026that\u2019s where the similarities end.<\/p>\n

They really are just part of a man\u2019s body, genetically and functionally, just as egg cells are part of a woman\u2019s body. They share the DNA of the organism from which they came, and carry out one function: reproduction.<\/p>\n

That word, organism, is what makes the difference. Once the sperm and egg cells combine, they combine to form an entity with its own<\/em> DNA, that is no longer carrying out a singular function for either parent but rather growing and establishing a set of functions for its own<\/em> development and survival. From fertilization onward, it\u2014or more accurately, he or she\u2014is not a cell but an organism<\/a>, an \u201cindividual constituted to carry on the activities of life by means of organs separate in function but mutually dependent.\u201d As James Agresti has explained<\/a> for Live Action, \u201chuman zygotes display all four empirical attributes of life\u201d in this sense:<\/p>\n

\n

1. Growth \u2013 As explained in the textbook Essentials of Human Development: A Life-Span View, \u201cthe zygote grows rapidly through cell division.\u201d<\/p>\n

2. Reproduction \u2013 Per Human Sexuality: An Encyclopedia, zygotes sometimes form identical twins, which is an act of \u201casexual reproduction.\u201d (Also, in this context, the word \u201creproduction\u201d is more accurately understood as \u201creproductive potential\u201d instead of \u201cactive reproduction.\u201d For example, three-year-old humans are manifestly alive, but they can\u2019t actively reproduce.)<\/p>\n

3. Metabolism \u2013 As detailed in the medical text Human Gametes and Preimplantation Embryos: Assessment and Diagnosis, \u201cAt the zygote stage,\u201d the human embryo metabolizes \u201ccarboxylic acids pyruvate and lactate as its preferred energy substrates.\u201d<\/p>\n

4. Response to stimuli \u2013 Collins English Dictionary defines a \u201cstimulus\u201d as \u201cany drug, agent, electrical impulse, or other factor able to cause a response in an organism.\u201d Experiments have shown that zygotes are responsive to such factors. For example, a 2005 paper in the journal Human Reproduction Update notes that a compound called platelet-activating factor \u201cacts upon the zygote\u201d by stimulating \u201cmetabolism,\u201d \u201ccell-cycle progression,\u201d and \u201cviability.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

If Silverman genuinely wanted to cure her ignorance of the subject, she wouldn\u2019t have to take our word for it\u2014scores of impartial biology texts and her own allies<\/a> will confirm it.<\/p>\n

Nor is her GoPro idea equivalent to the transvaginal ultrasounds she\u2019s satirizing. When this talking point started a few years ago, it was over a bill that never actually required<\/a> the ultrasound to be administered vaginally, and before the truth became politically inconvenient, the abortion industry itself admitted<\/em> that it already routinely does ultrasounds<\/a>\u2014including the transvaginal variety<\/a>\u2014in abortion.<\/p>\n

So she\u2019s not fighting for women\u2019s right not to have their bodies violated against their will, but for the abortion industry\u2019s right to hide from those women the images they\u2019ve already gotten.<\/p>\n

Sarah Silverman\u2019s ramblings are not one iota more scientific, intelligent, or informed than the notorious \u201cwomen\u2019s bodies can shut down rape pregnancy\u201d comments<\/a> that destroyed Todd Akin\u2019s political hopes and put pro-lifers on the defensive for months (years!) afterward. So where are all the pro-abortion leaders, commentators, and activists condemning her for embarrassing the cause, bastardizing science, and deceiving audiences?<\/p>\n

They\u2019re silent for the same reason pro-aborts enthusiastically accept all forms of embryology denialism<\/a>: they don\u2019t care what the truth is.
