The office of the Indiana attorney general will defend the conviction, arguing the law \u201cis not limited to third-party actors.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>However, Patel was also convicted of child neglect for abandoning her son after birth. Her attorneys claim this, too, was illegitimate because medical assistance would have been futile and that she did not know her son was alive. The state responded that the prosecution was \u201cnot required to prove that an attempt to obtain medical care would have saved the baby&#8217;s life,\u201d and that Patel \u201cplaced her baby in appreciable danger by not obtaining medical care for him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/petition\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-84611 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/NewDefundAd3.jpg\" alt=\"NewDefundAd3\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/NewDefundAd3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/NewDefundAd3-300x128.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Live Action News <a href=\"\/news\/death-lies-relativism-purvi-patel-feticide-conviction\/\">previously covered<\/a>, Patel was a 33-year-old, financially-stable woman who sought illegal abortion drugs.\u00a0Rather than either give her baby up for adoption, or seek a legal abortion, she wanted to hid the fact that she had slept with a married co-worker. Patel\u2019s emails and text messages confirm she had searched for, purchased, and used the abortion pills.<\/p>\n<p>After she delivered the baby, Patel wrapped him in a garbage bag and left him in a dumpster. Subsequent medical examination concluded the boy had taken a breath outside the womb.
