{"id":94754,"date":"2016-05-23T12:35:27","date_gmt":"2016-05-23T16:35:27","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=94754"},"modified":"2016-05-27T11:40:07","modified_gmt":"2016-05-27T15:40:07","slug":"oklahoma-abortion-ban-sponsor-may-attempt-to-override-veto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/oklahoma-abortion-ban-sponsor-may-attempt-to-override-veto\/","title":{"rendered":"Oklahoma abortion ban sponsor may attempt to override veto"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>In response to Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin\u2019s <a href=\"\/news\/oklahoma-governor-vetoes-bill-that-would-have-suspended-medical-lisences-of-abortionists\/\">Friday veto<\/a> of legislation that would have made performing an abortion grounds for loss of a physician\u2019s medical license, the bill\u2019s Republican author, Senator Nathan Dahm, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nola.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2016\/05\/lawmaker_considers_next_steps.html\">says<\/a> he is mulling the next stage for the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have not made a decision&#8221; on whether to attempt to override the veto, he said Saturday, but will decide this week. &#8220;That&#8217;s what we&#8217;re pursuing, what we&#8217;d like to see accomplished.&#8221; An override\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/oklegal.onenet.net\/okcon\/VI-11.html\">would require<\/a> a two-thirds vote in each chamber of the legislature.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Dahm noted that such a veto would face an uphill battle: \u201cSometimes people, even if they voted for the bill, are hesitant to vote to override the governor&#8217;s veto because of their concern about the governor being petty and vindictive and vetoing some of their legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republican Senate President Pro Tem Brian Bingman was also undecided on the next step: \u201cI want to support the governor as much as I can. At the same time, I want to support our members, so I&#8217;ll have to think on that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fallin, who is pro-life, vetoed the bill because she considered it unnecessarily vague and unlikely to survive a Supreme Court challenge.<\/p>\n<p>While some pro-lifers are supportive of Dahm&#8217;s legislation, others \u00a0have questioned the bill&#8217;s strategic wisdom on the grounds that, while the goal of banning abortion is correct, mounting a direct challenge to <em>Roe v.
