{"id":94642,"date":"2016-05-20T07:52:49","date_gmt":"2016-05-20T11:52:49","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=94642"},"modified":"2016-05-20T00:02:50","modified_gmt":"2016-05-20T04:02:50","slug":"new-obama-rule-threatens-to-force-hospitals-to-perform-abortions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-obama-rule-threatens-to-force-hospitals-to-perform-abortions\/","title":{"rendered":"New Obama rule threatens to force hospitals to perform abortions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>President Barack Obama\u2019s Department of Health and Human Services has issued a new administrative rule that could force any hospital or health provider receiving Medicaid funding or any insurer participating in the Obamacare marketplaces to provide abortions.<\/p>\n<p>HHS\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/1557%20Summary%20%28508%29.pdf\">summary<\/a> says the rule\u2019s purpose is to prohibit sex discrimination in health care, which the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/articles\/2016\/05\/18\/2016-11458\/nondiscrimination-in-health-programs-and-activities?utm_campaign=subscription+mailing+list&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=federalregister.gov\">rule<\/a> defines as including \u201ctermination of pregnancy.\u201d In addition to losing Medicaid funds, violators of the rule may be faced with civil suits as well as legal action by the Justice Department, upon it taking effect on July 18.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->According to HHS, the rule neither \u201cinclude[s] a religious exemption\u201d nor \u201cdisplace[s] existing protections for religious freedom and conscience,\u201d which the government claims are sufficient to protect the conscience rights of those who object to abortion.<\/p>\n<p>However, pro-life leaders contend the regulation cannot be trusted to respect conscience rights once in practice, due to the Obama Administration\u2019s refusal to simply remove the \u201ctermination of pregnancy\u201d language. \u201cThis action erodes Americans\u2019 freedom to believe and act in accordance with their beliefs,\u201d Family Research Council Vice President of Government Affairs David Christensen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frc.org\/newsroom\/family-research-council-statement-on-new-hhs-final-rule-on-obamacare\">said<\/a>. \u201cWe urge Congress to address this gross injustice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/AbortionProcedures.com\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-88619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN.jpg\" alt=\"levatino-ad-LAN\" width=\"306\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN.jpg 306w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Association of American Physicians and Surgeons executive director Dr. Jane Orient <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2016\/05\/14\/obama-admin-rule-forces-hospitals-doctors-accepting-federal-funds-provide-gender-transition-services-abortions\/\">added<\/a>, \u201cIt appears that the government is presuming to dictate medical ethics, and to turn them upside down: Thou SHALT do whatever we say, rather than thou SHALT NOT do evil things, such as killing, harming, or lying to patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If interpreted to mandate abortions, the impact could be massive. American Principles Project communications director Jon Schweppe <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulse2016.com\/jon-schweppe\/2016\/05\/19\/obama-admin-announces-new-rule-requiring-all-hospitals-to-perform-abortions-sex-changes\/\">notes<\/a> that 62% of all hospitals in the United States are nonprofit, and therefore \u201csimply can\u2019t function without [Medicaid] funding.\u201d On the other hand, Dr. Orient theorizes that rejecting federal funding may have the opposite effect: \u201cThis will also free them from a suffocating burden of costly regulations, enabling them to offer superior care at a fraction of today\u2019s prices\u2013and to preserve patient privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Barack Obama\u2019s Department of Health and Human Services has issued a new administrative rule that could force any hospital or health provider receiving Medicaid funding or any insurer participating in the Obamacare marketplaces to provide abortions.
