He\u00a0is also a columnist for the UK Daily Mail, who recently wrote a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/debate\/article-3580118\/Would-world-better-place-without-people-like-daughter-DOMINIC-LAWSON-likens-new-test-s-Syndrome-State-sponsored-eugenics.html\">piece<\/a>\u00a0strongly against a new screening process that detects Down&#8217;s syndrome. He wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The Department of Health is about to approve a scheme designed to bring about a world in which people like my youngest daughter will cease to exist.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Dawson is referring to a new non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPT) called \u2018cell-free DNA\u2019 or \u2018cfDNA&#8217;. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techtimes.com\/articles\/3830\/20140228\/new-cfdna-test-more-effective-in-determining-down-syndrome-in-fetus-than-standard-serum-screening.htm\">Cell-free DNA<\/a> works by analyzing fetal cells in the mother\u2019s blood and genetically testing them for signs of abnormalities.\u00a0A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rapid.nhs.uk\/about-rapid\/\">pilot study<\/a> (RAPID) commissioned by the \u00a0United Kingdom National Screening committee concluded that if implemented, cfDNA would lead to 102 more babies with Down syndrome being detected every year.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Figures from The National Down Syndrome Cytogenetic Register for England and Wales: 2013 Annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.binocar.org\/content\/annrep2013_FINAL.pdf\">Report <\/a>show that 90% of babies who are prenatally diagnosed with Down syndrome are aborted. If the pilot study is correct, 102 more babies with Trisomy 21 would be detected due to cfDNA testing with 92 of these preborn children projected to be aborted.<\/p>\n<p>According to a campaign against the testing called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/dontscreenusout.org\/campaign-faq\/\">Don&#8217;t Screen Us Out<\/a>,&#8217; this could lead to a\u00a0decline of 13% reported live births of babies with Down syndrome.<\/p>\n<p>Lawson is disheartened over the way in which this testing is being applauded. One newspaper spoke enthusiastically of &#8216;the eradication&#8217; of Down syndrome. Lawson believes this campaign&#8217;s \u00a0aim is to reduce people based solely on their possible disabilities. He writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The purpose of the medical campaign, however, is clear: it is to encourage more expectant mothers to undergo the screening process, on the grounds that it has been made less risky. But there is also a hidden agenda, which can properly be described as state-sponsored eugenics.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"ext-gen86\" class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span id=\"ext-gen88\">Lawson shares the accusations he received when the public discovered his family didn&#8217;t undergo pre-natal screening. A well known nurse wrote an article saying,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"ext-gen88\">&#8216;The Lawsons will not be paying the full price of their choice,&#8217;\u00a0and claiming &#8220;society would have to bear the burden of the &#8216;misery&#8217; of his daughter&#8217;s life.&#8221; Lawson says that thinking is the same used by a German academic Karl Binding whose book, <\/span><em>Permitting The Destruction Of Life Unworthy Of Life<\/em>, was used to influence the Nazis in forcing the mentally disabled to be\u00a0euthanized.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_94464\" style=\"width: 682px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94464\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-94464\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/dont-screen-us-out-down-syndrome.jpg\" alt=\"via DontScreenUsOut.org\" width=\"672\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/dont-screen-us-out-down-syndrome.jpg 672w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/dont-screen-us-out-down-syndrome-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-94464\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">via DontScreenUsOut.org Facebook page<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Similar sentiments are being voiced by concerned parents in the \u201cDon\u2019t Screen Us Out&#8221; campaign. They say the cfDNA test should not be implemented into the UK Fetal Anomaly Screening Programme at this time. Their\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dontscreenusout.org\/campaign-faq\/\">website<\/a>\u00a0states:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Implementing cfDNA screening at this stage would effectively mean introducing a worsened form of informal eugenics into our culture, particularly as a public perception that screening is now \u2018easier\u2019 may lead to a societal view that there is a duty to screen.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>They&#8217;re asking\u00a0for a delay to address issues such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A lack of clarity in communicating the diagnosis or prognosis of fetal disability<\/li>\n<li>A presumption of the medical profession that they would opt for abortion<\/li>\n<li>A lack of information and support for the option of bearing and raising their child with a disability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They believe the pressure parents receive to abort, along with a lack of support, violates the\u00a0UK\u2019s obligations stated in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The CRPD states that people with disabilities and their families should be accommodated, included, and supported by society.<\/p>\n<p>The Don&#8217;t Screen us out advocates are asking for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A full ethical review \u00a0of the cfDNA screening<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Improved training and guidance requirements for medical professionals<\/li>\n<li>The ready and accessible provision of every needed support for parents who choose to continue their pregnancy<\/li>\n<li>The provision of information about adoption services and short-term concurrent foster placement from birth<\/li>\n<li>The provision of information about and provision of palliative care for babies with a life limiting disability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They caution against detecting children with disabilities until those reforms are achieved and anti-disabled discrimination is avoided. The U.K Right to Life agrees <a href=\"http:\/\/www.righttolife.org.uk\/news\/national-screening-committee-performs-consultation-on-fetal-anomaly-screening\/\">stating<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Currently&#8230;.the implementation of any NIPT technique would worsen the current situation for both unborn children and their parents, and contribute to the pervasive perception that disabled lives are worth less than others, as well as other invidious and lethal forms of discrimination. Until our health system is fully committed to enabling, rather than disabling and thereby failing, patients who receive diagnoses of fetal disability, a potential good will become an actual harm. Her mother paid for an abortion but walked out of the doctor's office after a janitor in the hospital approached her. The janitor told her God would give her the strength to have her baby and she believed it. Hearing this story in her 20's caused Christina to become strongly pro-life. After graduating college in 2005, Christina spent a few years at the Justice House of Prayer in D.C and with the pro-life group Bound4Life. She then moved to the Atlanta to be on staff with the 24\/7 prayer ministry IHOP ATL. Christina is a wife and stepmom who currently works for a CareNet pregnancy center.
