Pro-abortion efforts to advance philosophical rationales<\/a> for their position or deceive people about abortion facts<\/a> are a relatively garden-variety form of shameful: people manipulating abstractions and impersonal information to get what they want (be it for ideological, political, or financial reasons).<\/p>\n

The real creepiness comes when they take pro-abortion lessons from profound personal experiences<\/a> that should have shown them the exact opposite message.<\/p>\n

At Rewire (formerly RH Reality Check<\/a>), Maureen Shaw tells readers<\/a> how \u201cbecoming a mother made me even more pro-choice.\u201d Have your barf bags ready before reading further.<\/p>\n

Conservatives and conventional wisdom have told us that it\u2019s only rash teenagers getting abortions.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Shaw goes on and on about this, even citing statistics showing that teens \u201caccount for less than one-fifth of all abortions.\u201d But\u2026when has anyone ever claimed<\/em> most abortion-seekers are minors, or Shaw\u2019s related straw-man that most abortion-seekers don\u2019t already have kids?<\/p>\n

This is part of what makes productive dialogue between the two sides so difficult: pro-aborts are constantly taking from our words and actions things that just aren\u2019t there\u2014in Shaw\u2019s case, while sneering that \u201canti-choice activists and politicians don\u2019t seem to care about the facts (or maybe facts are just difficult to read from their high horses).\u201d Projection<\/a>, Maureen. Read up on it.<\/p>\n

\n

This supposition is laden with baseless judgments: that those who seek abortion care are selfish; that they do so because having a child would cramp their depraved lifestyles (obviously the \u201cworst\u201d reason to terminate a pregnancy)[.]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Merriam-Webster defines<\/a> selfishness as disregarding others in pursuit of one\u2019s own interests. More than 70% of women who get abortions<\/a> say they decided babies were too expensive and would change their lives too much. So of course<\/em> most abortions (at least, among those that know<\/a> they\u2019re killing a living child) are selfish.<\/p>\n

\n

They insist on perpetuating the impulsive abortion patient trope, infantilizing women in the process. This is perhaps most evident in pushes for anti-choice legislation requiring waiting periods, counseling, and forced ultrasounds for people seeking abortions\u2014as if they can\u2019t or won\u2019t make informed decisions.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Or we support<\/a> those<\/a> laws<\/a> to counteract the abortion industry\u2019s pervasive misinformation campaign<\/a> on the subject, which one need not be \u201cinfantilized\u201d to be deceived by. And it\u2019s preposterous to claim accounting for the impulsiveness of some is calling everyone impulsive. I think it\u2019s obvious that I should slow down when driving in a school zone, but it\u2019s obviously not an insult that there are signs telling me to anyway.<\/p>\n

\n

Knowing now what it entails to be a mom\u2014from pregnancy, labor, and delivery to meeting the endless demands of other human beings\u2014I believe even more fiercely in abortion on demand and without apology. (And yes, you can be pro-choice and a parent; just read Pregnant, Parenting, and Pro-Choice for a smattering of stories). Everyone deserves to enter parenthood willingly, and every child deserves a parent who is willing to bear the responsibilities of this lifelong commitment. Children should be wanted and cherished, not forced into this world as punishment for their parents engaging in sex.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

From there Shaw lays it on even thicker: \u201cwomen and girls have abortions precisely because<\/em> they respect children and motherhood\u201d (emphasis added) and have even \u201cshown the institution of motherhood\u201d respect by aborting.<\/p>\n

Hey, I told you you\u2019d need barf bags.<\/p>\n

Nobody\u2019s denying the difficulties of pregnancy and parenthood, but to suggest those are the only<\/em> takeaways from the experience\u2014after you yourself describe it as bringing \u201clives\u201d into the world\u2014is frightening.<\/p>\n

Seeing her children\u2019s humanity on ultrasounds, feeling them kick, following their health as they developed, and giving birth to them as beautiful babies who clearly just didn\u2019t become fully formed the day before\u2026none of this made any contrary impressions on her? None of it is worth mentioning? She feels no obligation to explain how a mother can totally discount the life and humanity of children after witnessing it firsthand?<\/p>\n

Of course children deserve \u201cparent[s] who [are] willing to bear the responsibilities of this lifelong commitment,\u201d but that\u2019s an argument for giving them that through safe-haven adoption laws<\/a> and reforms to our adoption system<\/a>, not for depriving them of any chance of the family they deserve.<\/p>\n

Of course children \u201cshould be wanted and cherished,\u201d but that\u2019s not an argument for hurting them even worse because you don\u2019t want or cherish them.<\/p>\n

Of course children shouldn\u2019t be \u201cforced into this world,\u201d but that\u2019s why you shouldn\u2019t force them into the world in the first place by recklessly conceiving them, not a justification for forcing them out<\/em> of the world<\/em> once they\u2019re already here.<\/p>\n

Oh, and because the irony wasn\u2019t already thick enough, this horrifying exercise was brought to you by an author with a master’s degree in human rights<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sickening though it may be, this sort of thing may ultimately be pro-lifers\u2019 most potent weapon in turning America irrevocably against abortion: dragging the culture of death\u2019s most perverse, inhumane, and counter-intuitive thinking into the light for all to see.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
