Just days after unsuccessfully arguing<\/a> that banning abortion with rape and health exceptions is still too extreme, Vox has a new video<\/a> that purports to debunk the \u201cbiggest myth about abortion you probably think is true.\u201d Unfortunately, being Vox<\/a>, all the video ends up doing is reinforcing myths.<\/p>\n

The video\u2019s narrator, Liz Plank, demonstrates that those who \u201cfeel passionate about abortion\u201d \u201cdon\u2019t know much about it\u201d by interviewing pro-life protestors outside the Supreme Court. First:<\/p>\n

\n

Q: How often is surgery and sort of cutting involved when there\u2019s abortion?<\/p>\n

A: I am not a medical student.<\/p>\n

PLANK: Most abortions actually don\u2019t involve any kind of cutting or surgery. But in the protestors\u2019 defense, a Vox poll showed that most Americans on both sides of the aisle don\u2019t know this either.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019s true that most abortions don\u2019t involve cutting the mother <\/em>(something I don\u2019t recall a pro-lifer ever claiming anyway), but 78% of overall abortions and 96% of second-trimester ones<\/a> involve tearing apart<\/a> the baby, whether through suction or simply pulling the pieces apart with blunt instruments. To raise \u201cit\u2019s not specifically cutting<\/em>!\u201d as a defense, despite the technical detail neither refuting a specific claim pro-lifers are making nor altering anyone\u2019s objections to abortion, is the very definition of pedantry.<\/p>\n

\n

Q: How safe is abortion?<\/p>\n

A: I have no clue.<\/p>\n

A: Many women in Texas and other places around the country have been hurt in abortion facilities that aren\u2019t up to basic medical standards.<\/p>\n

A: I mean, I don\u2019t know a specific number, but a lot.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Before we get to Plank\u2019s answer, it\u2019s worth pointing out the meaninglessness of taking a few random private citizens who are pro-life, not professional pro-life advocates, and acting like you have a real story just because they don\u2019t have particular statistics memorized. Really, Vox?<\/p>\n

Most people aren\u2019t human encyclopedias with psychic links to Google, and this may come as a shock, but usually even professionals have to look up specific facts before speaking up in public. Exhibit A: Vox itself, which despite its pompous tagline as the \u201cnews explainer\u201d there to \u201cmake sure you understand what just happened,\u201d is so notorious for getting details wrong that conservatives<\/a> and<\/em> liberals (language warning)<\/a> alike mock the site for it.<\/p>\n

A bigger indicator of a movement\u2019s knowledgeability is the pervasiveness of ignorance about its own most basic beliefs and arguments\u2014like, for instance, not knowing the scientific consensus on when life begins<\/a> (Vox itself is stumped on that one<\/a>), not knowing how biology even defines organisms<\/a>, not knowing how many of their own side’s legal minds think Roe v. Wade<\/em> was bad law<\/a>, not knowing that pro-choice Supreme Court opinions also uphold many of the pro-life laws<\/a> they\u2019re trying to sue, or where the constitutional authority to force people to pay for contraceptives<\/a> comes from\u2026<\/p>\n

\n

Actually, abortion is safer than a host of other really common procedures like getting a colonoscopy or getting your wisdom teeth removed. If you\u2019re only looking at the safety of the mother, abortion is actually safer than childbirth. And again, it\u2019s not just anti-abortion protestors who don\u2019t know this.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Actually, we \u201cdon\u2019t know this\u201d because it\u2019s not true. In 2012, Professor Priscilla Coleman of Bowling Green State University challenged<\/a>\u00a0the oft-cited claim that abortion is 14 times safer than childbirth, noting that the previous study making this claim\u00a0suffered from severe underreporting of abortion data, wrongly classified deaths due to abortion as mere pregnancy deaths, and failed to consider abortions past the first trimester. (Abortion underreporting is a major problem<\/a> that obscures numerous truths surrounding abortion.)<\/p>\n

\"levatino-ad-LAN\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Another study the next year, from West Virginia University-Charleston\u2019s Obstetrics & Gynecology Dept.\u2019s vice chair Dr. Byron Calhoun,\u00a0also deemed the number bogus<\/a>\u00a0for similar reasons. Also in 2013, Coleman and the Elliot Institute\u2019s Dr. David Reardon examined 30 years of data<\/a>\u00a0from women in Denmark and found that abortion at 12 weeks or earlier was linked to an 80 percent higher<\/em> risk of death within a year of the procedure, and 40 percent higher within 10 years.<\/p>\n

In addition to mortality rates, abortion carries a range of physical, mental, and emotional dangers<\/a> you won\u2019t learn about from Vox\u2014and that\u2019s just from the \u201cgood\u201d abortionists; we haven\u2019t even gotten to the ones who blatantly disregard medical rules and patient safety<\/a> because pro-abortion politicians and organizations look the other way and cover for them<\/a>. Plank writes:<\/p>\n

\n

Around 1 in 3 women will have an abortion in their lifetime. Maybe it\u2019s time to talk about it with them.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Or maybe it\u2019s time for Vox to do some actual research, from which they would learn the actual statistic<\/a> the (biased and questionable<\/a>) Guttmacher Institute is just under 28%, not 33%, and the original study this claim came from, which actually said it was 30%, warned<\/a> even that wasn\u2019t intended to be taken as a \u201cprecise measure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Throughout the video, Plank puts on a veneer of impartiality by saying pro-lifers and pro-choicers are often under the same (supposed) misconceptions. But in the end she blows it away by saying the ultimate reason \u201cAmericans don\u2019t know these facts\u201d is because \u201cthe pro-life movement is capitalizing on this myth that abortion is inherently dangerous, and it\u2019s not.\u201d It\u2019s pro-lifers\u2019 fault because of course it is:<\/p>\n

\n

There are far more effective ways of actually improving women\u2019s health like increasing access to health care, contraception, and prenatal care. But the majority of us don\u2019t know the facts. Or worse the facts we do know are wrong.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
