{"id":93027,"date":"2016-04-20T16:45:50","date_gmt":"2016-04-20T20:45:50","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=93027"},"modified":"2016-04-20T14:51:09","modified_gmt":"2016-04-20T18:51:09","slug":"obama-admin-warns-states-its-illegal-to-defund-planned-parenthood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/obama-admin-warns-states-its-illegal-to-defund-planned-parenthood\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama administration warns states it&#8217;s illegal to defund Planned Parenthood"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The Obama Administration&#8217;s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services sent a letter to state governments Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/breaking-obama-administration-warns-states-defunding-planned-parenthood-vio\">claiming<\/a> that defunding Planned Parenthood would be in violation of federal law.<\/p>\n<p>According to the letter, a health provider offering abortions \u201cneither disqualifies a provider from participating in the Medicaid program, nor is the provision of such services inconsistent with the best interests of the beneficiary,\u201d and \u201cshall not be grounds for a state\u2019s action against a provider in the Medicaid program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The Obama Administration <a href=\"\/news\/obama-administration-states-defunding-planned-parenthood-are-breaking-law\/\">has sent<\/a> similar letters in the past arguing that state efforts to cut abortion providers off from Medicaid funds are illegal, and has even <a href=\"\/news\/obama-hhs-may-sue-texas-for-defunding-planned-parenthood\/\">threatened<\/a> to sue states for doing so. <a href=\"http:\/\/dailysignal.com\/2016\/02\/23\/a-10th-state-defunded-planned-parenthood-why-theres-so-much-momentum-now\/\">Ten states<\/a> have defunded the abortion giant in the wake of its <a href=\"\/news\/a-guide-to-how-planned-parenthood-is-breaking-the-law\/\">ongoing controversy<\/a> over selling the organs of aborted babies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/liveaction.org\/petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-84611\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/NewDefundAd3.jpg\" alt=\"NewDefundAd3\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/NewDefundAd3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/NewDefundAd3-300x128.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, Alliance Defending Freedom has explained that states do have legal discretion over Medicaid recipients within their own borders. \u201cIn the last two decades or so, about 9,000 providers [were] excluded from Medicaid. In most of those cases, they&#8217;re completely uncontroversial,\u201d ADF&#8217;s Casey Mattox says. \u201cWhen it&#8217;s Planned Parenthood, however, you have the Centers for Medicaid Services reinterpret the Medicaid statute to deny states the opportunity to exclude those providers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativereview.com\/commentary\/2015\/09\/a-comprehensive-guide-to-planned-parenthood-funding\">41 percent of Planned Parenthood&#8217;s annual revenue<\/a> comes from government grants and reimbursements, giving the abortion giant a substantial incentive to maintain its funding.
