{"id":92060,"date":"2016-04-11T15:14:06","date_gmt":"2016-04-11T19:14:06","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=92060"},"modified":"2016-04-11T15:46:37","modified_gmt":"2016-04-11T19:46:37","slug":"settle-times-paints-planned-parenthood-president-as-misunderstood-hero","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/settle-times-paints-planned-parenthood-president-as-misunderstood-hero\/","title":{"rendered":"Seattle Times paints Planned Parenthood president as misunderstood hero"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The woman who makes over half a million dollars a year profiting from\u00a0killing preborn babies has charmed a Seattle newspaper, which, in a recent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/life\/on-a-campaign-of-her-own-catching-up-with-planned-parenthoods-cecile-richards\/\" target=\"_blank\">feature article in the Seattle Times<\/a>,\u00a0takes up for her like she&#8217;s a misunderstood hero.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The paper aims to tell the story of the abortion profiteer as if she&#8217;s overcome every obstacle that life could unfairly throw at her, like she&#8217;s David meeting Goliath. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/life\/on-a-campaign-of-her-own-catching-up-with-planned-parenthoods-cecile-richards\/\">story says<\/a> (bias emphasized):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Richards, 58, has been at Planned Parenthood for a decade now, but much of America didn\u2019t know her until last September, when she underwent five hours of often <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/nation-world\/planned-parenthood-makes-first-hill-appearance-since-videos\/\">contentious exchanges<\/a> with members of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Richards <strong>remained calm while she was interrupted, condescended to, challenged about her salary<\/strong>, questioned about Planned Parenthood\u2019s services (family planning, cancer screenings, preventive care and, yes, abortions, which make up 5 percent of its work) and asked whether the government pays for abortions (yes, in the case of rape or incest).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">After five hours, <strong>Richards left the room unscathed, yet exhausted and saddened that the issues of women\u2019s health, and choice, are still not their own.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cAs if we don\u2019t have the competency or the fortitude to make important life decisions, like about pregnancy,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s what we do every single day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cThe total lack of empathy, I thought, was most profound.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8216;Poor Richards,&#8217; the paper laments, reinforcing Richards&#8217; pouting that no one understands her Very Important Mission. And she reminds people that she is not just the leader of that abortion mission, but she is one who has been there:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">After the third child, Richards became pregnant again and had an abortion, a decision she first shared in a 2014 essay in Elle magazine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cIt was the right decision for me and my husband,\u201d she wrote, \u201cand it <strong>wasn\u2019t a difficult decision<\/strong> \u2026 But I\u2019m here to say, when politicians argue and shout about abortion, they\u2019re talking about me \u2014 and millions of other women around the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/liveaction.org\/petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-84611\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/NewDefundAd3.jpg\" alt=\"NewDefundAd3\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/NewDefundAd3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/NewDefundAd3-300x128.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yes, they are talking about Richards, the woman who didn&#8217;t want her fourth child so she, without any difficulty, had the baby killed instead of giving another family a chance to raise her child. This is the woman at the helm of Abortion Central, the one the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/life\/on-a-campaign-of-her-own-catching-up-with-planned-parenthoods-cecile-richards\/\">Seattle Times openly welcomed<\/a> to the state:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Richards was happy to visit Washington state, where Planned Parenthood has 35 health centers that treat more than 100,000 women and men annually.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWashington state is really on the cutting edge of so many things that we\u2019re trying to do in terms of improving access to health care and reproductive rights,\u201d she said. \u201cI spend a lot of time in states that are really struggling and where folks are putting politics in front of access to care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In that sense, she said, Washington state is \u201cthe tip of the spear. You\u2019re where the country\u2019s going.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And the paper wants to be sure readers understand the stakes&#8211;as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/life\/on-a-campaign-of-her-own-catching-up-with-planned-parenthoods-cecile-richards\/\">told to them by Richards<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Richards called the coming election a point of demarcation that will determine \u201cwhether we\u2019re going to go forward into the 21st century or leap back into the 1950s and start over on things like women\u2019s rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Consider, she said: Every GOP presidential candidate has pledged not only to block access to safe and legal abortion, but also to eliminate Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, what she means is that if a Republican wins the White House this year, Planned Parenthood&#8217;s rocked boat may begin to sink. She&#8217;s correct &#8211; it will be a point of demarcation, because if a pro-lifer wins, then the veil over the abortion profiteer will be lifted even higher.<\/p>\n<p>But the Seattle Times seems to rally behind Richards&#8217; cause, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/life\/on-a-campaign-of-her-own-catching-up-with-planned-parenthoods-cecile-richards\/\">saying<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Her marching orders are to help voters understand what is at stake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cMaybe this is overly simplistic,\u201d she said, \u201cbut there is not a person in this country who wants their daughter to have fewer rights than they did. Or less opportunity. Or less of a future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cAnd I do think that\u2019s what this is going to come down to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">But it\u2019s not just daughters. Sons, too, visit Planned Parenthood, believe in its mission and make that clear when they see Richards on the street \u2014 more since the Congressional hearing than ever before.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While Planned Parenthood may have a mission, it&#8217;s certainly not to better people&#8217;s lives&#8211;only the abortion giant&#8217;s pocketbook.
