After her sickening contention<\/a>\u00a0this weekend that \u201cthe unborn person doesn\u2019t have constitutional rights,\u201d Hillary Clinton was apparently looking for an opportunity to sound a little more reasonable on abortion. She found it during her interview<\/a> on \u201cThe View\u201d Tuesday (abortion talk starts at 9:40):<\/p>\n

The former First Lady, Senator, and Secretary of State reiterated her general pro-abortion position in response to a question about those comments, leading to this exchange (11:40):<\/p>\n

CLINTON: I have no problem with people making the case, \u201clook, here\u2019s the best choice,\u201d or \u201chere\u2019s a better choice.\u201d But when the government gets involved, or when you say it\u2019s illegal and women and doctors are criminals, that\u2019s way too far.<\/p>\n

CANDACE CAMERON-BURE: So do you believe you can be pro-life and a feminist?<\/p>\n

CLINTON: Yes I do. Absolutely.<\/p>\n

CAMERON-BURE: They\u2019re not mutually exclusive?<\/p>\n

CLINTON: No, no, absolutely. Look, I’ve been, and I’m sure that Whoopi [Goldberg] and Joy [Behar] have been, we’ve been in these conversations now for, what, 40-plus years, right? And I respect the opinions and beliefs of every woman. The reason why being pro-choice is the right way to go is because it is a choice and hopefully a choice that is rooted in the thoughtfulness and the care that the women bring to this decision. So of course you can be a feminist and be pro-life.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

My, how generous.<\/p>\n

Lest anyone think she\u2019s showing genuine respect for differing perspectives here, take a closer look at what Clinton said. Reading her second statement in the context of the preceding one, it seems her idea of a \u201cgood\u201d pro-lifer is nothing more than the old \u201cpersonally pro-life\u201d standby\u2014i.e., she\u2019ll let you call yourself a feminist as long as your pro-life sensibilities are limited to gentle suggestions and not actual legal protection for preborn babies.<\/p>\n

For those of us who are \u201cpro-life\u201d in the sense of, y\u2019know, actual pro-lifers, she has far less respect. Last August<\/a>, Clinton likened pro-life candidates to \u201cterrorist groups\u201d and \u201cpeople who don\u2019t want to live in the modern world.\u201d Just last week<\/a>, she said \u201cmaybe they aren\u2019t quite as open about it as Donald Trump was earlier today, but they [Republicans] all have the same position\u201d of wanting to punish women for abortions<\/a>. Heck, her default rhetoric<\/a> is that the pro-life cause is \u201ca whole national effort to try to set back women\u2019s rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

So unless your definition of feminism somehow includes \u201copposing women\u2019s rights,\u201d you have little choice but to conclude at least one of Hillary\u2019s above comments is somewhat less than sincere.<\/p>\n

And considering how little Clinton actually meant here, it\u2019s especially hilarious to see that it was enough to set some pro-aborts off. The Week identified a few examples<\/a> of folks taking umbrage on social media (one actually equates feminists protecting babies to Amnesty International condoning torture), while Mediaite\u2019s Tommy Christopher (no stranger<\/a> to over-the-top pro-abortion pronouncements) frets<\/a> that \u201cHillary apparently forgot what \u2018Pro-Life\u2019 means,\u201d and \u201ceven accepting their \u2018pro-life\u2019 nomenclature is a tacit assertion that pro-choice people are somehow not<\/em> pro-life.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hate to break it to you, Tommy, but they\u2019re not. Any belief that any human life can be extinguished solely on the basis of another\u2019s desire is intrinsically anti-life.<\/p>\n

However, the most important point, which is sadly lost in the back-and-forth between Clinton\u2019s pro-abortion detractors and defendersalike, is that it\u2019s also intrinsically anti-feminist<\/a>. The leaders who originally gave the word \u201cfeminism\u201d its meaning and importance have plenty to teach<\/a> the modern pretenders to their throne on the subject\u2014Victoria Woodhull calling it a \u201cdemoralized condition\u201d for women to \u201cdeliberately murder\u201d in order \u201cto prevent becoming mothers,\u201d Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell accusing abortionists of \u201cgross perversion and destruction of motherhood,\u201d and much more<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because the equality they sought was real, compassionate, and humane<\/a>, the freedom to live and compete and participate in society on an equal footing with men, to reach their fullest potential without arbitrary constraints holding them back. But the degraded sort of \u201cequality\u201d pro-aborts are peddling in their name is nothing more than the power to be just as selfish, callous, and exploitative<\/a> as the worst of men.<\/p>\n

So make no mistake: no matter how moderate or conciliatory her political rhetoric may get, that is the sort of feminism Hillary Clinton\u2019s any time, any reason abortion platform<\/a> stands for.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
