We live in a country of equivocation.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m a vegetarian \u2014 but I eat chicken.\u201d \u00a0\u201cI\u2019ve been completely faithful \u2014 except for that one weekend in Vegas.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Or, \u201cI am pro-life \u2014 except in cases of rape or incest.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Okay, see \u2014 then no, you\u2019re not, and no, you haven\u2019t, and no, you aren\u2019t.<\/p>\n

If you had asked me two years ago about rape and pregnancy, I would have looked away uncomfortably, shifted my weight back and forth, and become suddenly engrossed in my fingernail polish. I\u2019ve always considered myself pro-life, but come on. \u00a0Rape?! \u00a0\u201cHow can we expect any woman to carry the memory of such horror?,\u201d is what I thought, like so many others.<\/p>\n

Even many of our staunchest pro-life religious and political leaders\u00a0make this exception. \u00a0We\u2019re talking about \u201crape babies,\u201d as they say, and it\u2019s best if we just allow it.

But that was two years ago.\u00a0 And things change. . . .<\/p>\n

He was very tall, young looking, and strong. \u00a0He wasn\u2019t there until suddenly he was everywhere. \u00a0I fought until I couldn\u2019t. As I became a statistic, I remember thinking how, for the rest of my life, time would be split:\u00a0 before this moment\/after this moment.\u00a0 And in the \u201cafter this moment,\u201d I became someone else \u2014\u00a0someone better, more honest, and stronger than I ever thought possible.<\/p>\n

While pregnant, I researched other stories, and reached out to Rebecca with Save The 1, who said: \u201cI think a lot of people would be really blessed by your story. Would you consider sharing it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh . . . , I don\u2019t know. . . .\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust as much as you\u2019re comfortable with \u2014 the commitment you\u2019ve had since the beginning to love this baby, especially your husband\u2019s love for you and for this child he\u2019s loved as his own.\u00a0\u00a0You\u2019re married and it\u2019s not the typical testimony.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Hmm, unconditional love.\u00a0\u00a0No \u2014 it isn\u2019t typical.

\nI thought of women like me \u2014 women who felt alone and unsure and terrified; women who wanted to keep their babies after being raped but are under that pressure to abort; women who didn\u2019t yet know what they were capable of and the courage they had.<\/p>\n

What if they read about\u00a0me? As different as our circumstances might be, maybe it would encourage them to know that they\u2019re not alone?\u00a0\u00a0And what about men \u2013 husbands and boyfriends of pregnant rape victims?\u00a0\u00a0They could see that it\u2019s possible to fall in love with that child regardless of origin or DNA.\u00a0\u00a0They could witness a husband who recognized the innocence and beauty of God\u2019s creation and saw only a baby that\u2019s a part of his beloved wife, and therefore\u00a0the decision was easy then.\u00a0\u201cOkay. Let\u2019s do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRaped on a business trip<\/a>\u201d was originally published in December, 2014.\u00a0\u00a0I prayed that it would touch people.\u00a0\u00a0I prayed whoever read it would be reminded of how God can bring good out of the worst evil.\u00a0\u00a0I prayed that women raising children from or pregnant by rape would feel encouraged.\u00a0\u00a0And I prayed for the ones who originally thought I should have aborted \u2014 that they might see the value down the path I took.\u00a0\u00a0It was a simple retelling of my story.\u00a0\u00a0Or so I thought.<\/p>\n

My story ended up being shared nearly a million times, through various outlets, reaching many who were not at all uplifted by the simple retelling of my story:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sure why you bothered to share. Or why you\u2019re parading yourself around as some great, moral person.\u00a0\u00a0This isn\u2019t just about YOU.\u00a0\u00a0You had a child who will know he came from rape.\u00a0\u00a0He may be okay with that, he may not. Congratulations.\u00a0\u00a0(Sound horrible? So does your attitude about other survivors who make different choices than you.)\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI hope she keeps in mind when the kid turns into the same as the man who infected her with a rape child and turns into a rapist, that is partially on her.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201c. . . there was no rational reason to allow this animal\u2019s spawn to walk the earth.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe when he punched her in the face there was some brain damage.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cPeople with this mentality feel free to get the f*** off my planet! Coat hanger that walnut sized rapist DNA deposit.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat kind of \u2018man\u2019 would raise another man\u2019s rape baby?? These people are f***ed in the head. I hate sharing the world with f***ing idiots.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
