This came as a huge shock to us both, as I have PCOS and it took seven-and-a-half years of trying, and many procedures and fertility medications and heartache, to conceive our daughter. We had a miracle baby on the way:\u00a0our third child.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I had a scan around six\u00a0weeks (as I have a history of recurrent miscarriage) on <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_192383030\"><span class=\"aQJ\">21st August,<\/span><\/span> which showed a heartbeat.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-91650 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/FB_IMG_1459196373382-385x700.jpg\" alt=\"FB_IMG_1459196373382\" width=\"385\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/FB_IMG_1459196373382-385x700.jpg 385w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/FB_IMG_1459196373382-165x300.jpg 165w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/FB_IMG_1459196373382.jpg 528w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><br \/>\nEventually my first midwife appointment came.\u00a0I had told her something didn&#8217;t feel right, but it was just brushed off.<\/p>\n<p>I carried on as normal, then I hit 11 weeks gestation and started bleeding on <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_192383031\"><span class=\"aQJ\">September\u00a016th<\/span><\/span>. I was offered a scan a few days later, which showed my baby alive and seemingly well with no visible sign of where the bleed was coming from.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-91647 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20151011_173659-700x641.jpg\" alt=\"20151011_173659\" width=\"474\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20151011_173659-700x641.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20151011_173659-300x275.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20151011_173659-768x703.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20151011_173659.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><br \/>\nThen the bleeding got worse, so I was scanned again on the\u00a023rd of September and, again, all looked alright.<\/p>\n<p>Then on October\u00a09th, 2015, the bleeding became heavier and was now passing on to a pad.\u00a0I was offered another scan and all seemed fine once more, and my baby had been developing as he should have been the\u00a0entire time.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-91656 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20151011_080158-1-700x596.jpg\" alt=\"20151011_080158-1\" width=\"474\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20151011_080158-1-700x596.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20151011_080158-1-300x255.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20151011_080158-1-768x654.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20151011_080158-1.jpg 921w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_192383034\"><span class=\"aQJ\">10th of October,<\/span><\/span> I felt him moving away inside of me; then around <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_192383035\"><span class=\"aQJ\">4:40 a.m.<\/span><\/span> on the morning of the\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_192383036\"><span class=\"aQJ\">11th of October,<\/span><\/span> I awoke with pains. I originally thought I needed the toilet (I suffer IBS), but nothing came. I kept trying, and then I vomited, which is very unlike me. At\u00a0around\u00a06 a.m., I got on the phone, as I suspected a water infection, which I am prone to.<\/p>\n<p>They said a doctor would call me back, but to inform them of any changes as I waited. After I finished this phone call, my water broke, and it kept coming and coming\u00a0(at this point I didn&#8217;t realize it was my waters).\u00a0I dialed\u00a0back emergency quickly,\u00a0which called an ambulance for me. They arrived, but just as they came through the door, I had another gush of waters which went through to my pajama bottoms. They came in and checked my blood pressure and asked a few questions;\u00a0then they said they need to take me in, so I went to the bathroom to change my pants and trousers.<\/p>\n<p>When\u00a0I sat on the toilet, I felt pressure\u00a0and\u00a0I put my hand there, and I caught something and then felt a snap\u00a0(it was the placenta coming away from the umbilical cord, which is how I caught it). They then told me I no longer had to go to hospital if I did not wish\u00a0to.\u00a0 I then asked them if they could test my baby and his placenta, to which they replied &#8220;No, it&#8217;s just one of them things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The next day being <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_192383038\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Monday,<\/span><\/span> I phoned the\u00a0funeral directors to arrange Phoenix&#8217;s cremation after calling the Women&#8217;s Center at Newark Hospital. I asked to speak to my own midwife, but she was on holiday so I spoke to another and explained what happened. I requested a post mortem and\/or placental testing, and she told me\u00a0no\u2014that it cannot be done.<\/p>\n<p>I then called King&#8217;s Mill Hospital and asked the same, and was again refused. I knew full well that this was possible, as it can be done on babies even at\u00a0six\u00a0weeks gestation, so I put the placenta in the freezer in the hope of fighting later after I had grieved. Little did I know this may be a problem.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-91651 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2015-11-17-22.01.10.jpg\" alt=\"2015-11-17 22.01.10\" width=\"394\" height=\"699\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2015-11-17-22.01.10.jpg 394w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2015-11-17-22.01.10-169x300.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\u00a0A week or so later, I got to talk to my midwife. I asked her for placental testing and she actually told me it was not possible\u2014 not even in full term babies! I was told what I had already heard before: &#8220;It&#8217;s just one of them things,&#8221; despite crying down the phone, begging her because I knew it could be done.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Shortly after, I saw my own GP, \u00a0who I explained things to and again asked for placental testing.\u00a0He was absolutely shocked and gobsmacked at what I had been told by the midwives and assured me it can be done. He informed me it\u00a0should have been done, given how far along I was,\u00a0 and he put in a referral for me to see a specialist. He also asked me the names of the midwives who had refused me.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-91652\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20151013_073016-1-700x546.jpg\" alt=\"20151013_073016-1\" width=\"474\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20151013_073016-1-700x546.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20151013_073016-1-300x234.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20151013_073016-1-768x599.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20151013_073016-1.jpg 1635w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While I was carrying Phoenix, I was offered nothing more but scans. I wasn&#8217;t offered any vaginal or internal exams, no urine checks, no swabs, and no blood pressure checks.\u00a0 I have been seriously let down and these basic checks should have been carried out. Born at 14 weeks and one\u00a0day on the 11th of October, 2015. My precious sleeping beauty. Look how perfect he is; 10 fingers, 10 toes with nails, a perfect little nose, feet and hands and a beautiful smile. You can see all his veins, too. He was PERFECT.
