{"id":91263,"date":"2016-03-31T15:35:21","date_gmt":"2016-03-31T19:35:21","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=91263"},"modified":"2016-03-31T18:42:21","modified_gmt":"2016-03-31T22:42:21","slug":"abortion-advocates-need-to-check-their-privilege","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-advocates-need-to-check-their-privilege\/","title":{"rendered":"Abortion advocates need to check their privilege"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>These days, it\u2019s all the rage in some quarters to tell people to \u201ccheck their privilege\u201d\u2014i.e., to feel guilty about all the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/regajha\/how-privileged-are-you#.qxRBPpE4B\">many, many, many, many ways<\/a> (real and imagined) this <em>eeeeevil<\/em> society of ours allegedly advantages us over others. Usually this \u201cprivilege deficit\u201d can be rectified by supporting a variety of policies that tend to all be supported by the same people. Total coincidence, I\u2019m sure!<\/p>\n<p>The privilege craze has <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/privilege\/\">plenty of its own problematic contradictions and ramifications<\/a>, but it also provides a new opening to illustrate pro-abortion hypocrisy. Author and Union University Associate Provost Hunter Baker did just that in a recent tweet:<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">All those pro-choice people exhibit the unconscious privilege of those who never have to worry about being aborted.  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/bornprivilege?src=hash\">#bornprivilege<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Hunter Baker (@hunterbaker) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hunterbaker\/status\/715006157593702401\">March 30, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I love it. It\u2019s basically a restatement of one of President Ronald Reagan\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/ws\/?pid=29407\">most famous pro-life lines<\/a>, simply phrased in a way abortion advocates\u00a0themselves often think:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">With regard to the freedom of the individual for choice with regard to abortion, there&#8217;s one individual who&#8217;s not being considered at all. That&#8217;s the one who is being aborted. And I&#8217;ve noticed that everybody that is for abortion has already been born.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This formulation also provides an obvious counter to the <a href=\"\/news\/bernie-sanders-smears-men-belittles-women-abortion-tweet\/\">tired, demeaning line<\/a> that men need to shut up about abortion because we\u2019re \u201cprivileged\u201d to not have to worry about getting pregnant. Sure, abortion advocates\u00a0will certainly try to deny they\u2019re the privileged ones in abortion, but how can they, based on the rules they themselves have established?<\/p>\n<p>At Everyday Feminism (a <a href=\"http:\/\/everydayfeminism.com\/2015\/07\/media-destigmatize-abortion\/\">pro-abortion<\/a> website which abortion advocates\u00a0will presumably accept as fairly representing the concept), Sam Dylan Finch <a href=\"http:\/\/everydayfeminism.com\/2015\/07\/what-checking-privilege-means\/\">defines<\/a> privilege as \u201can unearned advantage, in comparison to other people\u201d that benefits somebody \u201conly because there are aspects of our identity that society values over others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I defy any abortion advocate\u00a0to explain how that doesn\u2019t fit the born versus the preborn like a glove.<\/p>\n<p>We all start out exactly like abortion\u2019s victims; the only thing separating the born from the preborn is a minimum of nine months. But once you clear that window, odds are overwhelming that you\u2019ll never again have to worry about the possibility that anybody could make it legal to kill you\u2014solely because society has accepted the <a href=\"\/news\/the-science-of-abortion-when-does-life-begin\/\">objectively-baseless<\/a> notion that the preborn aren\u2019t as valuable.<\/p>\n<p>So pro-&#8220;choicers&#8221;\u00a0feel perfectly content to resign\u00a0defenseless, disregarded babies to a violent fate, safe in the subconscious confidence that society will never decide that their own rights don\u2019t matter anymore because somebody finds their lives to be inconvenient.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abortionprocedures.com\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-88733\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN-1.jpg\" alt=\"levatino-ad-LAN\" width=\"402\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN-1-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In fact, the only people in the abortion debate <em>not<\/em> acting out of privilege are pro-lifers. Aside from cases such as <a href=\"\/news\/amanda-marcottes-new-low-demonizing-grieving-fathers-of-aborted-children\/\">fathers grieving over lost sons and daughters<\/a>, the vast majority of us who oppose abortion don\u2019t get any direct benefit from whether a child we don\u2019t know and aren\u2019t related to lives or dies. If anything, we are denying ourselves the potential use of abortion as an escape hatch from our own decisions\u2019 consequences\u2014women from pregnancy itself; men <a href=\"\/news\/course-misogynists-hate-pro-lifers-abortion-makes-life-easy\/\">from the responsibilities of fatherhood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, there\u2019s one final way to determine which side\u2019s position is rooted in principle and which is in privilege. On Monday, Blaze columnist Cullen Herout had a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/contributions\/dear-abortion-advocates-heres-how-you-could-convince-me-abortion-is-okay\/\">great column<\/a> explaining how he could theoretically be persuaded to support abortion:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">My belief that abortion is wrong rests on two logical premises. Consequently, you could convince me that abortion is okay by disproving either one of my premises. It\u2019s logic 101. You don\u2019t even have to disprove both of them, just one will suffice. In fact, my whole argument for why abortion is morally wrong would crumble to pieces if either of these premises were disproven.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Here are the two premises, and the conclusion, that my beliefs are built on:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1. Abortion takes the life of an innocent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abort73.com\/abortion\/medical_testimony\/\">human being<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">2. Taking the life of an innocent human being is wrong.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>And, therefore, abortion is wrong<\/em> [\u2026]<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If there is a God, but the unborn is not a human being, I\u2019m okay with abortion. If the unborn child is a human being, but there is no God and thus no objective truth, morality is relative and I would be unable to say that abortion is absolutely wrong.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So that\u2019s my answer for what it would take to get me to change my mind. What\u2019s yours?<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>When your positions come from earnest attempts to know what\u2019s right and wrong, you develop clear criteria by which your mind could be changed. But if your position comes from selfish efforts to protect a privilege you enjoy, then the criteria you try to pass off for principles is subject to change whenever convenient, no matter how contradictory.<\/p>\n<p>Abortion is okay because life doesn\u2019t begin at conception\u2014until <a href=\"\/news\/bill-nye-returns-unscientifically-deceive-america-abortion\/\">so many pro-aborts admit it does<\/a> that you have to switch gears and decide it\u2019s okay to kill living babies because of <a href=\"\/news\/pulling-the-plug-on-the-violinist-argument-for-abortion\/\">bodily autonomy<\/a>. Early-term abortions are okay because weeks-old fetuses are nothing like born babies\u2014until the subject turns to aborting late-term fetuses virtually indistinguishable from newborns, at which point banning is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bpnews.net\/24800\/santorum-boxer-exchange-defined-partialbirth-debate\">still unthinkable<\/a>. Even purely hypothetical <a href=\"\/news\/wow-pro-aborts-really-really-want-the-baby-to-die\/\">thought experiments about artificial wombs<\/a> ending pregnancies without death have to be opposed, despite <em>giving pro-aborts everything they claim to want<\/em>, because\u2026 they just do, okay?<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s follow Hunter Baker\u2019s example and get #bornprivilege trending, because it\u2019s long past time for pro-aborts to check their privilege.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These days, it\u2019s all the rage in some quarters to tell people to \u201ccheck their privilege\u201d\u2014i.e., to feel guilty about all the many, many, many, many ways (real and imagined) this eeeeevil society of ours allegedly advantages us over others.
