Conservative pundit and Daily Wire<\/a> editor-in-chief Ben Shapiro has done yeoman’s work<\/a> in exposing the illogic of pro-abortion doctrine, and his latest work<\/a> is no different. During the question session following a recent speech at Salisbury University in Maryland, a number of pro-abortion college students finally got an opportunity to try out the talking points that have so impressed them against a real, live opponent\u2026 and it didn\u2019t go so well for them:<\/p>\n

The video is deeply satisfying to see pro-abortion ideologues\u2019 ignorance finally catch up to their arrogance for once, but it\u2019s also deeply disturbing. Most of us have from time to time seen web forum discussions in which people absolutely convinced of their moral and intellectual superiority display a scandalous lack of critical thinking skills and unfamiliarity with the most rudimentary facts of the issue, but at least they tend to have the caveat of \u201cit\u2019s the internet,\u201d hardly representative of our country\u2019s true intellectual condition.<\/p>\n

Here, though, we have college students\u2014who are presumably in college to pursue \u201chigher learning,\u201d have achieved enough academically to get admitted in the first place, and are attending a campus political talk because they\u2019re more engaged than others in the student body\u2014who are every bit as uninformed and thoughtless as the average internet troll. Let\u2019s take a look at some of the most damning examples.<\/p>\n

\n

STUDENT: It\u2019s my body. How about you just stay out of it? [Crosstalk]<\/p>\n

STUDENT: Why do you care so much about\u2014<\/p>\n

SHAPIRO: I don\u2019t care about your appendix. I don\u2019t care about your thorax. I don\u2019t even care about your uterus. I care about what\u2019s in it.<\/p>\n

STUDENT: And I can take out my appendix if I don\u2019t want it. So why can\u2019t I take out other parts of my body?<\/p>\n

SHAPIRO: Because they are not independent living human beings.<\/p>\n

STUDENT: They\u2019re not independent living human beings when they\u2019re a bundle of cells.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

To this, Shapiro asked, \u201cat what point does that bundle of cells become a human being in your view?\u201d After a tellingly-long pause, an \u201cum,\u201d another pause, some crosstalk, her explanation that \u201cI just need to calm down for a second\u201d before answering,\u201d and another<\/em> lengthy pause, she replied by\u2026 changing the subject to life-of-the-mother cases and late-term abortion.<\/p>\n

Think about that: \u201cwhat exactly is in the womb?\u201d is the very first question any sane person should ask<\/em> before figuring out what to think about abortion. It\u2019s bad enough when pro-aborts try to change the subject or twist logic to pretend it\u2019s not really a human life until birth, but to not have any<\/em> answer ready? Has she never bothered to research it? How do you argue for or against anything without familiarizing yourself with the basics first?<\/p>\n

At this point, another pro-abortion student stepped in to take over for her clearly-floundering classmate by invoking the famed \u201cbodily autonomy\u201d argument for abortion, which while still fallacious<\/a> is at least an argument. But she too soon proved to be ill\u00a0equipped for serious discussion.<\/p>\n

To Shapiro\u2019s point that \u201cthe baby is not part of your body\u201d she incredibly claimed \u201cyes it is\u201d (the baby\u2019s DNA being different<\/a> from the mother\u2019s shows otherwise). Then, after a nonsensical exchange about viability (which Shapiro swiftly debunked by pointing out that people in iron lungs are no more \u201cviable\u201d than a fetus who needs an umbilical cord), she preposterously said he \u201cmanipulat[ed] science to advance your own views\u201d (after being unable to refute a single scientific claim he made) and even accused him of \u201cshutting people down.\u201d Shapiro asked how that could be when she had been talking for quite a while at that point, so \u201cshutting people down\u201d suddenly became \u201cyou haven\u2019t actually answered our questions.\u201d<\/p>\n

The stupidity here is almost physically painful. The \u201cno answers charge\u201d is a self-evident lie, and \u201cshutting people down\u201d perfectly encapsulates the safe-space\/triggering derangement<\/a> sweeping the county\u2019s colleges. Once, the purpose of higher education was to expose young people to new and challenging ideas, thereby broadening their preconceptions of the world and forcing them to deepen not just what but how they think. This was understood to be a key component of an arcane, outdated process known as \u201cgrowing up.\u201d But now a student\u2019s prejudices (as long as they\u2019re the right ones) are meant to be sheltered and coddled from anything that might disrupt his or her ego.<\/p>\n

The result, as we see here, is that disagreeing with a pro-abortion advocate is now an infringement. Discussion itself is dangerous\u2014even a discussion that the \u201cvictim\u201d instigated.<\/p>\n

Finally, a third student tried to corner Shapiro with an obligatory case of \u201ctrying too hard to be clever results in making a fool out of yourself\u201d:<\/p>\n

STUDENT: You\u2019re talking about, you know, what defines a, you know, a life or whatever, so scientifically speaking, do you consider semen life? So I\u2019m pretty sure you probably masturbate a lot \u2018cause you\u2019re a human being.<\/p>\n

SHAPIRO: Well put. Well put, sir [audience laughter]. I believe, as do most people who feel this way about abortion, that life begins at conception. When sperm meets egg, when the child is conceived, that\u2019s when life begins. That\u2019s what I believe.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\"conception,Sigh<\/em>. This may not be the most consequential scientific fallacy pro-aborts use, but it\u2019s definitely the one that makes me want to slam my head against the wall the most. Individual sperm cells and egg cells are not living human beings, and therefore not equivalent to zygotes or embryos<\/a>, because they actually are parts of the parents\u2019 bodies, not organisms. They don\u2019t have their own DNA distinct from the man\u2019s or woman\u2019s, but preborn babies do. They have no inherent capacity to develop into anything else on their own, whereas the preborn from fertilization onward not only grow and develop, but display all the other characteristics<\/a> of a living organism, such as metabolism and response to stimuli.<\/p>\n

Pro-lifers are by no means perfect; we make weak arguments<\/a> from time to time, and no movement has a monopoly on intelligence. But most pro-lifers on their worst day wouldn\u2019t be caught dead knowing so little about either the issue itself or the other side\u2019s arguments. This culture of willful ignorance\u2014and worse, of feeling apparently no moral responsibility to really understand significant topics one is passing judgment on\u2014among the pro-abortion youth of the incoming generation<\/a> is another grim reminder of the work we\u2019ve got out for us in changing the future\u2019s hearts and minds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
