margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9180 alignright\" style=\"margin: 25px; border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"counsel\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/counsel.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"167\" \/>Shortly before my daughter was born, I received counselor training from a major pregnancy resource center in my home state.\u00a0 I was excited to learn about this side of the pro-life movement.\u00a0 I wanted to learn how to help women in crisis and help them <em>want<\/em> to keep their babies.\u00a0 I was sadly disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>This pregnancy center taught from a manual entitled \u201cEquipped to Serve.\u201d\u00a0 Now, I\u2019ll first say that there are many good principles taught and explained in this manual.\u00a0 I did learn valuable lessons from the training.\u00a0 However, it was not as I expected.\u00a0 I thought a pregnancy center would want to show women realistic pictures of their growing, developing unborn child.\u00a0 I thought they would want women to hear the truth.\u00a0 Not so.\u00a0 Well, at least the truth was a watered-down version.<\/p>\n<p>We were trained to care about the woman more than the baby, when in reality, we should care equally about them both.\u00a0 We were trained to meet the woman where she is, instead of helping her get where she could be.\u00a0 We were not to talk her into keeping her baby\u2014after all, this would be manipulative.\u00a0 We would be attempting to get something that <em>we<\/em> wanted.\u00a0 Somehow, trying to convince a mother to keep her child was deemed wrong.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Far from being manipulative, I believe that telling a woman the truth about the child developing inside her and showing her truly scientific pictures about life in the womb is empowering.\u00a0 Countless women have said, after their abortion, \u201cIf only they had told me it was a baby.\u201d\u00a0 I still remember one of my mom\u2019s friends sadly talking about her abortion:\u00a0 \u201cThey just told me it was a blob.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet, when I did my last practice counseling session, one of the biggest criticisms I received from the volunteer director of the center site was\u2014make sure you\u2019re sitting down\u2014that I called the baby a baby too many times. \u00a0In fact, I wasn\u2019t supposed to call the baby a baby at all.\u00a0 I was supposed to say \u201ca pregnancy\u201d.\u00a0 Unless the mother referred to her baby as a baby.\u00a0 Then\u2014and only then\u2014was my language appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, this experience greatly disheartened me.\u00a0 It also infuriated me.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve seen Abby Johnson\u2019s documentary about her switch to the pro-life side, she specifically states that Planned Parenthood taught her:\u00a0 \u201cDo NOT refer to this as a baby.\u201d\u00a0 And this is the same advice\u2014or training, really\u2014that we\u2019re getting from pregnancy resource centers???<\/p>\n<p>Now, I\u2019m certainly NOT saying that people shouldn\u2019t support, donate to, or volunteer at a pregnancy resource center.\u00a0 Centers like the one I was trained at do indeed help women who want to keep their baby but aren\u2019t sure how to do it.\u00a0 They try to get women to have ultrasounds done, offer them for free, and do change some women\u2019s minds.\u00a0 I am incredibly grateful for much of their work.<\/p>\n<p>But\u2026if you can locate a pregnancy resource center near you that actually helps women in crisis; that helps women hear the truth instead of sugar coating it; that reaches out to women before they make the worst decision of their lives\u2014choose to help that center instead.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll give a great example.\u00a0 <a title=\"Lighthouse Pregnancy Center\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousedenver.org\/\">Lighthouse Pregnancy Center<\/a> is about to open in Stapleton (near Denver), Colorado.\u00a0 It will be located across from one of the largest Planned Parenthood abortion centers in the nation.\u00a0 If I have my facts correct, it ranks as the second or third largest, actually.\u00a0 It\u2019s huge.\u00a0 And horrible.\u00a0 You can read an \u201carticle\u201d The Onion wrote about it <a title=\"here\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theonion.com\/articles\/planned-parenthood-opens-8-billion-abortionplex,20476\/?mobile=false\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 While they may have been poking fun at the pro-life side, you&#8217;ll recognize the cold, hard truth in what they admit about Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n<p>Rosalinda Lozano, Executive Director of Lighthouse Pregnancy Center, says this:\u00a0 \u201cLighthouse will be bold in every way as a medical and resource center for parents in crisis. Being across the street from Planned Parenthood gives us a very unique opportunity to speak the truth with charity while we provide these women answers, resources, understanding and true empowerment.\u00a0 We want the women who come to us to have a sense of real dignity and a new understanding of what authentic femininity is and what it can do for the soul.\u00a0 We also want to include men in this ministry, helping them to understand how their accountability and support of these women can impact the life or death of their children.\u00a0 Lighthouse will truly be a Beacon of Hope for Women and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When I asked Rosalinda what she thought of centers who ask their counselors not to refer to babies as babies, she said, \u201cI disagree with the philosophy of centers who do not proclaim the truth boldly because women in crisis need the truth.\u00a0 Women need to hear that their baby is dependent on them.\u00a0 Women need to hear that their baby will be a joyful challenge in their future.\u00a0 Women need to hear that abortion is the ending of the life of this child.\u00a0 Women need to hear the truth!\u00a0 The truth is engrained in our souls and when we hear it, we recognize it.\u00a0 Most women have been lied to for so long, that when they are treated with a less than bold effort, they fall back on the status quo and continue to believe that they are weak and powerless.\u00a0 This could not be further from the truth; when women are faced head on with the truth, they suddenly become aware of reality and feel empowered to make solid decisions based on fact.\u00a0 Our efforts are based on the truth of Jesus Christ and only that truth can promote dignity and strength in women and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now that\u2019s the kind of pregnancy resource center pro-lifers can be proud to support.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shortly before my daughter was born, I received counselor training from a major pregnancy resource center in my home state.\u00a0 I was excited to learn about this side of the pro-life movement.\u00a0 I wanted to learn how to help women in crisis and help them want to keep their babies.\u00a0 I was sadly disappointed.
