{"id":90770,"date":"2016-03-23T15:00:41","date_gmt":"2016-03-23T19:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=90770"},"modified":"2016-03-23T15:00:41","modified_gmt":"2016-03-23T19:00:41","slug":"tennessee-advances-bill-to-prevent-illegal-baby-parts-sale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/tennessee-advances-bill-to-prevent-illegal-baby-parts-sale\/","title":{"rendered":"Tennessee advances bill to prevent illegal baby parts sale"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The Tennessee State Senate is <a href=\"http:\/\/nashvillepublicradio.org\/post\/tennessee-abortion-clinics-one-step-closer-disclosure-rule-fetal-remains#stream\/0\">considering<\/a> legislation that would require abortionists to report on how they dispose of the remains of aborted babies, to ensure they are not illegally selling them for research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is that no one in the Department of Health could say whether it\u2019s happening or not in Tennessee, because we didn\u2019t have the framework in place,\u201d Republican Senator Kerry Roberts explained in support of the bill, SB 2568. &#8220;It\u2019s really about the remains and how we\u2019re handling the remains, so that they\u2019re not sold.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The bill comes as a reaction to undercover videos from the Center for Medical Progress <a href=\"\/news\/a-guide-to-how-planned-parenthood-is-breaking-the-law\/\">revealing<\/a> Planned Parenthood officials discussing not only the sale of aborted babies&#8217; organs, but alluding to making a profit off of them illegally.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/liveaction.org\/petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-84611\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/NewDefundAd3.jpg\" alt=\"NewDefundAd3\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/NewDefundAd3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/NewDefundAd3-300x128.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another GOP Senator, Mike Bell, said he hopes SB 2568 would give his constituents \u201ccomfort to know that those horrible practices that we saw in the videos are not taking place in Tennessee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month, state GOP leaders <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesfreepress.com\/news\/politics\/state\/story\/2016\/feb\/10\/womick-pulls-abortibill-requiring-women-get-u\/349351\/\">withdrew<\/a> legislation to directly bar the sale of fetal tissue. Tennessee Right to Life said it preferred to regulate tissue donations to prevent illegal profits instead.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate Judiciary Committee voted to pass the bill on Tuesday.
