In her book <em>Protecting the Right to Choose<\/em>, she says&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">My first day on the job, a staff member took me on a driving tour of our seven clinics, which primarily served low income women. I was &#8230; distressed by the environment in which those services were delivered. Many of the clinics were dilapidated. The furniture was decrepit. The medical staff wore T\u2013shirts and jeans. I worried that women coming into these clinics might feel as though they were not deserving of medical settings comparable to those more prosperous women would expect. I made the same point to our board in their next meeting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWe should not provide medical services in these settings, and the fact that we serve mostly poor women does not justify the conditions of these clinics. It\u2019s an insult to poor women to strive for anything less than what other women would expect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite the poor\u00a0condition of the facilities, Michelman says that she was &#8220;very impressed&#8221; with the level of medical care provided in them. One wonders, however, how competent\u00a0the medical care could have been \u00a0if the facilities\u00a0were so dilapidated and poorly kept.\u00a0Reading that abortion centers are &#8220;decrepit&#8221; does not inspire faith in how safely abortions were done in them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrlc.org\/uploads\/factsheets\/gosnellfactsheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Kermit Gosnell<\/a>, whose <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phila.gov\/districtattorney\/pdfs\/grandjurywomensmedical.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">filthy, disgusting clinic<\/a> was raided and later shut down, served mostly poor women and minorities. Gosnell is now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2013\/may\/15\/philadelphia-abortion-doctor-kermit-gosnell-sentenced-life\" target=\"_blank\">serving time in jail<\/a> for killing a woman in a botched abortion <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2013\/04\/26\/meet-semika-shaw-the-other-woman-kermit-gosnell-killed-in-an-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\">(she was not the first)<\/a> and killing babies born alive after abortion procedures, which he routinely did.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/AbortionProcedures.com\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-88619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN.jpg\" alt=\"levatino-ad-LAN\" width=\"306\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN.jpg 306w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/levatino-ad-LAN-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While Michelman does not indicate that the abortion facilities\u00a0she saw were as filthy as Gosnell&#8217;s, an environment of shabbiness can&#8217;t help but have a negative effect on aborting women.<\/p>\n<p>Women deserve better than having their babies torn from their wombs in a shabby, dilapidated abortion center. Pro-lifers often speak about women being the second victims of abortion. Michelman&#8217;s account illustrates how true this is.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, this quote shows\u00a0how important it is to inspect abortion facilities\u00a0regularly and to make them to adhere to basic safety standards. Perhaps abortion\u00a0activists fight such requirements because they know many of the facilities\u00a0operate in a substandard fashion. Their argument is that abortion centers\u00a0would close if they were to be held to the standards of other surgical facilities. Sadly, Michelman&#8217;s account indicates that they are right.
