The Supreme Court heard opening arguments<\/a> on HB2 this week. Opponents say the Texas abortion law creates \u201can undue burden<\/a>\u201d that won\u2019t benefit women. I think Lou Ann Herron would feel otherwise.<\/p>\n

In 1998, Herron saw Dr. John Biskind at an Arizona abortion facility. Biskind successfully aborted her baby, but he knew something was off: an hour and forty five minutes later, his patient still wasn\u2019t alert. That didn\u2019t prompt him to stick around through; he clocked out less than an hour after that to visit his tailor. The next time a doctor laid eyes on Lou Ann Herron, she was being wheeled into an emergency room.<\/p>\n

Dead.<\/p>\n

Herron bled to death<\/a> from a tear in her uterus. While the law in question wouldn\u2019t have prevented her injuries, one of its provisions would<\/i> have required Biskind to remain on site until Herron was released. Another would have demanded that he have admitting privileges at a local hospital.<\/p>\n

Requiring a physician to have admitting privileges isn\u2019t unusual; it\u2019s standard at clinics offering all kinds<\/a> of medical services. Admitting privileges allow a doctor to bypass the ER and make sure the hospital knows a patient\u2019s condition ahead of time. That\u2019s important when you\u2019re suffering from internal injuries, a lesson the abortion industry has taught too many<\/a> women.<\/p>\n

Yet another provision requires abortion centers to meet the same standards as other surgical facilities. Those in the abortion industry claim this expectation is too onerous–probably because they can\u2019t even meet the standards that already exist. The abortion chain that\u2019s suing Texas has been cited<\/a> for multiple health code violations, including the use of rusty equipment<\/a>, something that \u201chad the likelihood to cause infection.\u201d<\/p>\n

Additional citations were given<\/a> when staff didn\u2019t \u201cperform the correct procedure for the sterilization of the surgical instruments,\u201d a potential cause of \u201cinfection control issues.\u201d The outfit was also fined<\/a> for not having \u201ca midlevel provider, a registered nurse, or a \u00a0licensed vocational nurse\u201d at one of its locations.<\/p>\n
