{"id":87513,"date":"2016-02-11T12:44:52","date_gmt":"2016-02-11T17:44:52","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=87513"},"modified":"2016-02-11T12:44:52","modified_gmt":"2016-02-11T17:44:52","slug":"obama-budget-could-allow-for-creation-of-three-parent-embryos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/obama-budget-could-allow-for-creation-of-three-parent-embryos\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama budget could allow for creation of three-parent embryos"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>New Jersey Republican Congressman Chris Smith is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2016\/02\/10\/barack-obama-pushes-fda-to-allow-scientists-to-create-three-parent-embryos\/\">warning<\/a> that President Barack Obama&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-obama-budget-idUSKCN0VI0AZ\">proposed<\/a> 2017 budget omits language in previous budgets that blocks the creation of genetically-modified human embryos, such as preborn lives conceived from the genetic material of three parents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The scientific community in the US has made clear it would like to create genetically modified human embryos, recently releasing a report that advises the FDA to move forward with approving these controversial technologies,&#8221; according to a statement from Smith&#8217;s office. &#8220;The only safeguard against FDA action in favor of genetically modifying human embryos is&#8221; pro-life language drafted by Alabama Republican Congressman Bob Aderholt.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The Aderholt language kept the FDA from approving the practice in the 2016 Fiscal Year omnibus appropriations bill, but has not been included in the latest version. A panel of ethicists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/speaking-of-science\/wp\/2016\/02\/03\/to-prevent-disease-ethicists-approve-creation-of-embryos-with-three-genetic-parents\/?tid=sm_tw\">recommended<\/a> last week that the FDA lift the ban.<\/p>\n<p>However, Obama&#8217;s proposal has yet to be considered by Congress, and is likely to differ greatly from what actually becomes law.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, when covering the advent of three-parent embryos in England, Live Action News&#8217;s Susan Michelle <a href=\"\/news\/three-parent-babies-may-be-born-in-england-soon\/\">wrote<\/a>, &#8220;the destruction of embryo stage humans is troubling here.
