The measure needed two-thirds support\u00a0and so it failed to pass.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation originally <a href=\"\/news\/veto-override-vote-defunding-planned-parenthood-set-january-26\/\">passed Congress<\/a> 240-181 in the House and 52 to 47 in the Senate, but Obama vetoed it, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/breaking-president-obama-vetoes-bill-to-defund-planned-parenthood\">declaring<\/a> that the bill &#8220;would reverse the significant progress we have made in improving health care in America&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/09\/us\/politics\/obama-vetoes-bill-to-repeal-health-law-and-end-planned-parenthood-funding.html\">and<\/a> &#8220;disproportionately impact low-income individuals.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Rep. Diane Black (R-TN), one of House&#8217;s leading proponents of defunding legislation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/breaking-president-obama-vetoes-bill-to-defund-planned-parenthood\">reacted<\/a> to the veto by declaring, &#8220;President Obama\u2019s gall is stunning. He spent this week discussing the need to \u2018protect innocent people\u2019 and \u2018save more lives\u2019 yet he callously vetoed a bill to protect the most innocent and vulnerable among us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The override was never expected to attain the\u00a067 Senate votes and 290 House votes needed to make it law without Obama&#8217;s signature, but serves <a href=\"\/news\/despite-veto-congress-defunding-planned-parenthood-historic\/\">symbolic value<\/a> as the first defunding bill to reach a President&#8217;s\u00a0desk.
