(LifeSiteNews<\/a>) \u2013 Toronto\u2019s Scott abortion facility, run by abortionist Robert Scott and his wife Maria Corsillo, is \u201cclosing its doors after 29 years,\u201d according to an announcement on its website.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, we are closed,\u201d a Scott Clinic staff person verified in a telephone call from LifeSiteNews, but refused to say why. The staff member said only, \u201cI have no idea who you are, or why you would be calling with such a question, thank you for calling us,\u201d before hanging up. It is rumored that the reason for the closure is abortionist Scott\u2019s retirement.<\/p>\n

Jim Hughes, president of Campaign Life Coalition, welcomed the news. \u201cIt would be the same response I would have if you told me that the camps were closing in Auschwitz,\u201d he told LifeSiteNews. \u201cI wish it had happened years before.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the beginning of the many that need to be closed,\u201d said Mary Burnie, a longtime picketer and sidewalk counselor at the Scott facility. \u201cTo close one is good, but to close them all would be a lot better.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy heart\u2019s desire would be to see that Scott\u2019s place is not just turned into something else but turned into an abortion holocaust memorial place,\u201d said pro-life activist Linda Gibbons, \u201cthe way we have these places in Europe to remember the gulags.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gibbons estimated that she\u2019s been arrested at least 10 times in front of the Scott abortion facility for breaching the 1994 injunction that prohibits pro-life demonstrations and sidewalk counseling within 500 feet of Toronto abortion facilities.<\/p>\n

She was most recently released January 21 after her September 2 arrest in front of the Morgentaler abortion facility.<\/p>\n

But the pro-life grandmother, who has spent 11 years in jail for her peaceful pro-life witness, told LifeSiteNews that, \u201cWe should be not talking about how many times I was arrested there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, people should remember \u201chow many people lost their lives, how many Canadian little ones expired at this location, to do honor and respect to their deaths,\u201d Gibbons said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a death center in the middle of our town.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scott and Corsillo started the abortion center on 157 Gerrard Street in 1986 \u2013 when operating a free-standing abortion center was a criminal offense.<\/p>\n

Scott, in fact, had been arrested three years earlier in Winnipeg along with abortionist Henry Morgentaler after opening an illegal abortion center there, relates an online history of Morgentaler, Canada\u2019s most\u00a0notorious abortion campaigner<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Scott, Morgentaler, and abortionist Les Smoling (who operated an illegal abortion center in Toronto from 1965 to 1968) also opened an illegal abortion center in Toronto in 1983, which police raided that year, charging the three with conspiracy to procure a miscarriage.<\/p>\n

A jury acquitted the trio in 1984, and while the Ontario government appealed that decision, Scott was arrested in 1986 \u2013 five months after opening his own illegal abortion facility, but Ontario\u2019s attorney general ultimately stayed the charges.<\/p>\n

In 1988 the Supreme Court struck down Canada\u2019s abortion law in its R. v. Morgentaler decision, in which Scott, Smoling, and Morgentaler are the named appellants.<\/p>\n

And in 1994, under NDP Premier Bob Rae, Attorney General Marion Boyd brought in a \u201ctemporary\u201d injunction to protect the province\u2019s abortionists, while at the same time suing 18 named pro-life defendants.<\/p>\n

The injunction, still in force, prohibits demonstrations, picketing, and sidewalk counseling within 500 feet of the entrance of Toronto abortion centers.<\/p>\n

It is generally thought the NDP\u2019s crackdown on pro-life advocates\u2019 freedom of speech and movement was prompted by the rise of the rescue movement in Toronto, in which pro-life advocates blocked the doors of abortion centers in an attempt to save women and their unborn children from the violence of abortion.<\/p>\n

And a 1992 firebombing of the Morgentaler abortion center, then on Harbord Street, was believed to have been a factor in the unprecedented government repression of pro-life activity. While the media portrayed it, without any evidence, as the work of an anti-abortion activist, charges were never laid and the prime suspect was the father of a child aborted at the facility.<\/p>\n

What Hughes recalled most about the Scott abortion center was the demeanor of the abortionist\u2019s wife, Maria Corsillo. \u201cIf we couldn\u2019t have the women reconsider because of the peaceful presence of people there, perhaps because of her behavior, others were frightened away,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Gibbons also remembers Corsillo. \u201cShe\u2019d always say \u2018I\u2019m the manager of the Scott Clinic,\u2019 she wouldn\u2019t say \u2018I\u2019m the abortionist\u2019s wife and the clothes I\u2019m wearing are bought with blood money,\u2019\u201d she told LifeSiteNews.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was always almost hyperventilating with pro-lifers there. She\u2019d run up and down the street if there was a demonstration, telling the police, \u2018Arrest them! Arrest them!\u2019\u2026She\u2019d just be in such a fluff always.\u201d<\/p>\n
