{"id":86179,"date":"2016-02-02T11:31:10","date_gmt":"2016-02-02T16:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=86179"},"modified":"2016-02-03T14:24:25","modified_gmt":"2016-02-03T19:24:25","slug":"naral-presidents-abortion-story-example-modern-feminisms-failure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/naral-presidents-abortion-story-example-modern-feminisms-failure\/","title":{"rendered":"NARAL president&#8217;s abortion story an example of modern feminism&#8217;s failure"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Despite the oft-repeated pro-choice claim that women don&#8217;t take abortion lightly, NARAL Pro-Choice America president Ilyse Hogue has published a video online which follows in lock-step alongside other abortion rights leaders like Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, openly admitting that her\u00a0abortion\u00a0was\u00a0for reasons of convenience &#8211; not for a &#8220;hard case.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hogue&#8217;s contraception failed, and because she believed she couldn&#8217;t achieve her dreams if she gave birth to a child, she chose abortion out of convenience:<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LYiHJrWrRv4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>She begins by stating:<em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I&#8217;m Ilyse Hogue. I&#8217;m the president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, which I might not be if I hadn&#8217;t had access to a legal abortion twenty years ago when I got pregnant due to a contraception failure.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Let&#8217;s pause here and dissect what she just said. The feminist president of an abortion group just implied that pregnancy alone can keep a woman from success &#8211; even at approximately 26 years of age (Hogue is now 46). Next, she says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I always say my abortion story is boring. I got pregnant, I wasn&#8217;t ready to be a parent, I wasn&#8217;t with the person I wanted to be with for the rest of my life, we weren&#8217;t financially secure, we both had dreams that we wanted to go on and achieve.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Does\u00a0having a child\u00a0mean\u00a0that\u00a0one cannot achieve one&#8217;s dreams?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I think about my abortion, but I certainly don&#8217;t regret it. It allowed me to go on and do work that I think was incredibly impactful&#8230; If we can&#8217;t decide that we&#8217;re not ready to be parents then everything else we aspire to fades from view.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Everything else we aspire to fades from view&#8221;?\u00a0How dramatic.\u00a0Why is it that adoption is\u00a0so rarely considered\u00a0when a woman thinks she &#8220;isn&#8217;t ready&#8221; to\u00a0parent\u00a0a\u00a0child?\u00a0And where is the\u00a0feminist empowerment in\u00a0Hogue&#8217;s claims that\u00a0giving birth to a baby would have sunk her entire future?\u00a0Hogue&#8217;s &#8220;boring abortion story&#8221; is really a story of failure for 21st century feminism rather than some fake sense of liberation, as Hogue\u00a0promotes the very\u00a0old-fashioned notion that motherhood somehow hinders women. On the other hand, pro-life feminist groups like <a href=\"http:\/\/newwavefeminists.blogspot.com\">New Wave Feminists<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feministsforlife.org\">Feminists for Life<\/a> are growing in popularity\u00a0because they promote modern, life-affirming solutions for women. Let&#8217;s face it, Hogue&#8217;s &#8220;boring abortion story&#8221; is not a positive message for women.<\/p>\n<p>Amazingly, the\u00a0NARAL leader just had a <a href=\"http:\/\/registry.thebump.com\/ilyse-hogue-john-neffinger-june-2015\/11231884\" target=\"_blank\">twins<\/a> and- surprise! &#8211; she is <em>still<\/em> the head of NARAL! Hogue made the announcement on her Facebook page last June:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">June 17th, my husband and I were thrilled to meet our new daughter and son when they came into the world at 11:29 and 11:34 am respectively. We&#8217;re still getting used to being new parents with all of the flood of emotions&#8211; overwhelming joy and confusion and awe.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In her video, Hogue also makes the claim that where abortion access goes down, the number of injuries and deaths from abortion go up. One problem:\u00a0<a href=\"\/news\/7-facts-you-might-not-know-about-legalized-abortion\/\">there&#8217;s no proof of this<\/a>. One more problem: women have been injured <a href=\"http:\/\/studentsforlife.org\/womenkilledbylegalabortion\/\">and killed<\/a> (to name a few: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/inhuman\/jennifer-morbellis-story\/\">Jennifer Morbelli<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/inhuman\/pa-gosnell-house-of-horrors\/\">Karnamaya Mongar<\/a>, <a href=\"\/news\/i-am-tonya-reaves-while-obama-sharpton-and-jackson-remain-silent-black-pro-life-leaders-speak-out-on-abortion-related-tragedy\/\">Tonya Reaves<\/a>) for the past 43 years from <em>legal<\/em> abortion, without even a whisper of concern from NARAL or any other abortion rights organization.<\/p>\n<p>What\u00a0Hogue\u00a0and\u00a0NARAL don&#8217;t seem to grasp is that their\u00a0definition of feminism,\u00a0along with\u00a0the targeting of a weaker individual &#8211; a woman&#8217;s own child &#8211;\u00a0diminishes women as a whole. Pro-life feminist Erika Bachiochi said it best in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/01\/22\/opinion\/bachiochi-abortion-roe-v-wade\/\" target=\"_blank\">op-ed<\/a> she penned for CNN:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">When we belittle the developing child in the womb, a scientific reality that most pro-choice advocates have come to admit, we belittle and distort that child&#8217;s mother. We make her out to be one with property rights over her developing unborn child (much as husbands once had property rights over their wives).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We give her the inhumane (but for 42 years, constitutionally protected) right to decide the fate of another human being, of a vulnerable child \u2014 her child \u2014 to whom she properly owes an affirmative duty of care.
