{"id":85656,"date":"2016-01-18T15:52:38","date_gmt":"2016-01-18T20:52:38","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=85656"},"modified":"2016-01-18T15:52:38","modified_gmt":"2016-01-18T20:52:38","slug":"obama-commemorates-religious-freedom-denying-pro-lifers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/obama-commemorates-religious-freedom-denying-pro-lifers\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama commemorates religious freedom while denying it to pro-lifers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>In a move pro-lifers are calling hypocritical, President Barack Obama <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2016\/01\/15\/obama-declares-tomorrow-religious-freedom-day-as-he-forces-catholic-nuns-to-fund-abortions\/\">declared<\/a> Saturday, January 16 to be &#8220;Religious Freedom Day,&#8221; in commemoration of the 1786 Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, authored by Thomas Jefferson.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since our country\u2019s founding, religious freedom has been heralded as one of our most cherished ideals,&#8221; Obama said, going on to affirm that the US &#8220;stands for the protection of equal rights for all people to practice their faith freely, without fear or coercion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The president claimed credit for protecting religious freedom: &#8220;my Administration is working to preserve religious liberty and enforce civil rights laws that protect religious freedom,&#8221; and professed to believe that &#8220;an attack on any faith is an attack on every faith.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, Obama&#8217;s pro-life critics charge that his administration has been at the forefront of attacking religious liberty. For years, the Obama Administration has been <a href=\"\/news\/obama-admin-forces-religious-nonprofits-provide-abortifacients\/\">mired in legal battles<\/a> with numerous religious nonprofits who oppose the federal government&#8217;s efforts to force them to provide coverage for contraceptives, including abortifacient drugs, in violation of their religious objections.<\/p>\n<p>President Obama also recently <a href=\"\/news\/breaking-president-obama-vetoes-legislation-defunding-planned-parenthood\/\">vetoed legislation<\/a>\u00a0that would have stripped taxpayer dollars from the U.S&#8217;s leading abortion provider Planned Parenthood &#8211; money which millions of religious (as well as secular) Americans argue forces them to support an organization diametrically opposed to their values.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.encyclopediavirginia.org\/An_Act_for_establishing_religious_Freedom_1786\">very document<\/a> Obama was honoring, Jefferson wrote that it was &#8220;sinful and tyrannical&#8221; to &#8220;compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he
