D&C abortions are rather gruesome procedures. They are usually performed in the first 13 weeks of pregnancy, and are one of the most common abortions done in the U.S. According to the doctors who perform them, the babies are often alive the entire time.<\/p>\n

(Note that a “D&C” is not always an abortion. Women sometimes need a D&C procedure after suffering a miscarriage or for other health reasons. The descriptions in this article only apply to D&C abortions<\/em>, when a living preborn child is involved.)<\/p>\n

Haskell testified in a case<\/a> before the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin about his abortion experience. The following is part of his testimony:<\/p>\n

Haskell:<\/strong> I’ve performed approximately or greater than 40,000 suction curettage [D&C] abortions.<\/p>\n

Q.<\/strong> When you perform an abortion by the suction curettage method does it ever happen that a portion of the fetus is extracted from the uterus while the fetus is still alive?<\/em><\/p>\n

Haskell:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n

Q.<\/strong> And how does that happen?<\/em><\/p>\n

Haskell:<\/strong> Well, when we do a suction curettage abortion, you know, roughly one of three things is going to happen during the abortion. One would be is that the catheter as it approaches the fetus, you know, tears it and kills it at that instant inside the uterus. The second would be that the fetus is small enough and the catheter is large enough that the fetus passes through the catheter and either dies in transit as it’s passing through the catheter or dies in the suction bottle after it’s actually all the way out. …<\/p>\n

Giles testified <\/a>in the same court case as Haskell.<\/p>\n

Giles:<\/strong> The fetus in the suction D&C is much smaller, generally less than 12 weeks of gestation, and the fetus either in whole or in part passes through the plastic cannula \u2026 and then goes into a suction machine where there’s a gauze bag that then traps the fetal structure and the placental structure as well.<\/p>\n

Q<\/strong>.<\/strong> Okay. Can the heart of a fetus or embryo still be beating during a suction curettage abortion as the fetus or embryo comes down the cannula?<\/em><\/p>\n

Giles:<\/strong> For a few seconds to a minute, yes.<\/p>\n

Below is a video of a child’s heart beating at 4.5 weeks gestation. This is two weeks after her heart began to beat. The child’s heart first beats at 18 days gestation, before many women know they are pregnant.<\/p>\n
