But during that same time period, personal struggles and great loss in his life opened his eyes to the realities of abortion and his participation in it.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->In an interview with Live Action President Lila Rose, Levatino\u00a0says abortion was simply a part of his job\u2014 just like delivering babies and performing C-sections\u2014 but that abortion was very different for him and other OB\/GYN providers.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TYia8SrfqQk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re an obstetrician \/ gynecologist and you say, &#8216;I\u2019m pro-choice,&#8217; well, that becomes rather a more personal thing because you\u2019re the one who does the abortions,\u201d said Levatino in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QiS-d7Jp5dk\">a speech<\/a> for the Pro-Life Action League.<\/p>\n<p>His first spark of doubt concerning abortions occurred less than two years after he graduated, when he and his wife discovered they weren\u2019t able to conceive a child. Having decided to adopt, they struggled with the arduous task of finding a newborn who needed a home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember very vividly, being in the delivery room one day doing a Suction D &amp; C abortion and thinking, you know, \u2018My gosh, I\u2019m throwing this kid in the garbage, you know, and here I am trying to adopt a baby when I\u2019m throwing them away\u2019,\u201d he told Rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019m smart enough to know it\u2019s people like me that make adoption so difficult in the first place. So the initial doubts that I had were selfish ones, but they were there.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_64717\" style=\"width: 484px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64717\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-64717 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/DE-14week-700x454.jpg\" alt=\"D&amp;E-14week\" width=\"474\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/DE-14week-700x454.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/DE-14week-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/DE-14week.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-64717\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suction D&amp;C abortion procedure<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Still, Levatino buried those doubts, and he while ending the lives of numerous preborn children, he was reaching out to everyone he knew about his desire to adopt. Finally, in August of 1978, that dream came true when he learned of a 15-year-old girl in labor who wanted to place her baby for adoption. Levatino and his wife were able to adopt their daughter, whom they named Heather, and one month later they discovered his wife was pregnant with their son, Sean.<\/p>\n<p>The couple now had what Levatino calls a \u201cperfectly happy\u201d life, and despite those concerns of throwing away babies through abortion, Levatino returned to his work delivering babies and performing abortions as usual.<\/p>\n<p>But then the worst thing imaginable for a parent happened. While playing outside, his daughter, Heather, just a few months away from her sixth birthday, ran into the street and was hit by a car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, I\u2019m a doctor. I\u2019m supposed to be able to save people\u2019s lives. My wife was an intensive care nurse at the time. This is what we did for a living. This was routine to us,\u201d he explained to Rose. \u201cBut it made absolutely no difference and she literally died in our arms in the back of an ambulance that night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pain from the tragic loss of his daughter followed Levatino into the room where he performed his first D &amp; E abortion since her death\u2014 and when he ripped out that tiny baby\u2019s limb, he became sick. He didn\u2019t want to continue on, but had no choice, since stopping that abortion could cause an infection in his patient.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-82895 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/de-1.jpg\" alt=\"de\" width=\"653\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/de-1.jpg 653w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/de-1-300x218.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 653px) 100vw, 653px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really, for the first time in my career, really looked at that pile of baby parts sitting on a table and I didn\u2019t see all those things that had sustained me all those years. I didn\u2019t see what a wonderful doctor I was helping her with a problem, and I didn\u2019t see her wonderful right to choose, and I didn\u2019t even see the $800 cash I just made in 15 minutes. All I could see was somebody\u2019s son or daughter,\u201d Levatino\u00a0told Rose.<\/p>\n<p>Hoping the feeling would pass, he committed\u00a0a few more abortions. But he soon realized that these women were handing him cash to kill their babies, and he accepted\u00a0it\u2014that\u2019s when he stopped doing second trimester abortions.<\/p>\n<p>While this decision was huge for him and his co-workers, he was still aborting the youngest preborn babies. However, it wasn\u2019t long until he realized it doesn\u2019t matter how many weeks old a preborn child is\u2014 abortion at any time is the killing of a child. He is now a major advocate for the preborn, testifying against legal abortion before Congress, and speaking out on what actually happens during abortion procedures.
