(Newsbusters<\/a>)\u00a0One women\u2019s magazine is hyperventilating over the fact that an image of a fetus actually looks like\u2026 a baby.<\/p>\n

Writing for Elle magazine, Sady Doyle recently criticized a\u00a0Newsweek\u00a0December cover<\/a>\u00a0in a\u00a0piece<\/a>\u00a0titled \u201cWhy Does\u00a0Newsweek\u2019s\u00a0\u2018Abortion Wars\u2019 Cover Show a Cartoon Fetus Instead of a Woman?\u201d Doyle commended the magazine for tackling abortion in its new cover story \u2013 but bashed the cover illustration for showing a fetus that looked \u201cmore like a baby\u201d than an \u201cactual pregnancy.\u201d Puzzled yet?<\/p>\n

In a rant, Doyle described what made her \u201cflabbergasted\u201d by the cover: the fact that the image showed a \u201cwell-developed, relatively late-term fetus\u201d with \u201cno sign\u201d of the woman in whose \u201cuterus it is presumably housed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guessing that the fetus was between twelve and fourteen weeks old, Doyle criticized the picture for making the age \u201chard to tell.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c[I]t looks about five times bigger\u00a0than the translucent, two-inch-long fetuses you normally find at that stage,\u201d she wrote, \u201cthis image looks less like an actual pregnancy, and more like an adorable computer-generated alien.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOr, to be blunt: More like a baby,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Doyle had a problem with the idea that abortion would destroy anything cute \u2013 or anything resembling a baby.<\/p>\n

With the word \u201cabortion\u201d placed next to the fetus image, she complained, \u201cwe can assume it’s not going to be around for long.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because of this, the cover \u201csums up what’s\u00a0wrong with how we talk about abortion\u201d or \u201cEverything\u00a0is about the fetus, which is humanized,\u00a0<\/strong>and the actual pregnant person is\u00a0erased.\u201d<\/p>\n

(Has she\u00a0read the news<\/a><\/em>\u00a0lately?\u00a0Or ever<\/a>?)<\/p>\n

That led Doyle to warn about the \u201clong history of fetal images being used to scare people and rile up anti-abortion sentiment\u201d which has \u201centered the mainstream of conservative politics.\u201d<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Doyle protested, the cover was \u201cmisleading\u201d\u00a0because it wasn\u2019t \u201cexactly representative.\u201d Most abortions happen before twelve weeks, or, in her words, \u201cthe embryo being removed is less \u2018futuristic Gerber baby,\u2019 more\u00a0\u2018lentil-sized clump\u00a0of cells.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Plus, she added, if a fetus is aborted after twelve weeks, the \u201cpregnancy is in many cases\u00a0not healthy\u201d with issues such as birth defects.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo even in cases where a fetus was carried long enough to look very human,\u201d she pushed, \u201cit probably wouldn’t look like a healthy, happy baby.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the end (as in the beginning), she decided the fetus was \u201cbeside the point.\u201d<\/p>\n

What mattered, she insisted, was a \u201cdecision made by one person,\u201d whether by a woman or a non-binary person or a transgender man (yes, she went there).<\/p>\n

\u201cBy focusing exclusively on fetuses, and promoting the imagery of endangered, persecuted \u2018babies\u2019 in the womb,\u201d she wrote, \u201cpeople who oppose abortion are able to totally avoid talking about the ways in which their positions\u00a0endanger and persecute\u00a0the actual people carrying those fetuses around<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Doyle,\u00a0Newsweek\u00a0ignored the victims of abortion with the fetus image\u00a0alongside the words \u201cabortion wars\u201d:<\/p>\n

\n

It ignores\u00a0Robert Lewis Dear’s victims,\u00a0murdered abortion doctors, and\u00a0rape victims forced to carry their rapists’ children to term. It erases poor women forced to have children they can’t afford, and people who aren’t able to pursue educations because they had children too early.\u00a0It leaves out any person who wants to control their own body, but can’t, because of abortion restrictions.\u00a0Put \u2018abortion wars\u2019 next to their faces, and you get a whole different message \u2013 one that’s much closer to the truth.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A \u201ctruth\u201d that would censor\u00a0the\u00a057 million<\/a>\u00a0American babies lost since legalized abortion, that is.<\/p>\n
