More than two years after pro-choice activists protested loudly against updated health regulations on North Carolina abortion facilities, the new regulations are being implemented<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The legislation requires that abortion facilities\u00a0be held more accountable to health standards. Each facility\u00a0is required to maintain a more structured\u00a0nursing staff and a quality assurance program. They must\u00a0provide a 24-hour phone number for patients in case complications arise, and have a plan in place to transfer patients to a local hospital. Several regulations had not been updated since the 1990’s.<\/p>\n

In 2013, North Carolina Republicans\u00a0attempted to pass\u00a0legislation that would have mandated abortion facility\u00a0regulations to meet the same standards as those of\u00a0ambulatory surgery centers\u00a0– however, the legislation signed into effect only states that\u00a0this\u00a0is optional.<\/p>\n

Tami Fitzgerald of the North Carolina Values Coalition said the rules should be tougher, but they are at least\u00a0putting more scrutiny\u00a0on local abortion facilities,\u00a0and the regulations\u00a0will be a step forward in better protecting the health and safety of women.<\/p>\n

“I think the rules made a good start,” Fitzgerald said.<\/p>\n

Last year, North Carolina passed legislation requiring abortion facilities\u00a0to be inspected once per year – an increase from the former standard of once every three to five years.
