It was ten after twelve. I was late again. A new man stood on the sidewalk alone, holding a sign I couldn\u2019t quite read from where I parked. As I crossed the road I noticed it read, \u201cI support StemExpress.\u201d<\/p>\n

So this must be Jim.*<\/p>\n

Susan\u00a0told me last Friday that a man had approached the picketers\u00a0on Wednesday<\/span>\u00a0and said he was going to organize a counter protest. The protesters were civil\u00a0–\u00a0cordial, even. They told him he was welcome on the sidewalk any time. This is what freedom is all about. Susan\u00a0told me he seemed surprised\u00a0\u00a0by the welcome, even as both sides expressed their view that the other was wrong.<\/p>\n

Jim\u00a0had science and research on his side, he said, and he was out to set the record straight.<\/p>\n

So, as I crossed the street, I walked right up to him with my protest signs tucked under one arm while extending the other towards him. We shook hands as I said, \u201cYou must be Jim;\u00a0welcome to the sidewalk. Susan\u00a0told me you\u2019d be coming. I\u2019m Marcia.\u201d<\/p>\n

As I took my place on the other side of the StemExpress driveway, I selected two signs. One read, \u201cSelling Body Parts is Illegal,” and the other, \u201cA person’s a person no matter how small. By Dr. Seuss.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the StemExpress security guard watched from the sidelines, Jim\u00a0and I exchanged polite conversation. \u201cHow long have you lived here?” Jim\u00a0had me beat. My family\u2019s only lived here since the late 80’s. He and his wife had been here since the mid-70’s.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo Jim, what brings you to the sidewalk?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m here because the Colorado shooter was incited by the language you use,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

I started a comeback, but he shut me down flat, saying, \u201cI don\u2019t want to debate this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay,” I said, quickly regretting that the first words out of my mouth weren\u2019t something like,\u00a0What happened in Colorado was a terrible tragedy. I\u2019m against violence in all its forms.<\/em>\u00a0But the moment was lost.<\/p>\n

For a space of about five minutes, we said nothing. I prayed silently, interspersed with calls of \u00a0\u201cthank you\u201d to the passersby who showed support for my protest with a honk or a wave. Then I looked at Jim\u00a0and said, \u201cWe should keep score.\u201d<\/p>\n

With a smile he said, \u201cI already have been. I\u2019ve got ten, you\u2019ve got six.\u201d I was tempted to lobby a protest right then. There was no way he had ten supporters. He must have been counting before I arrived. But instead, I said, \u2018You’re on.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next moment, a man drove by, and honked and waved at\u2026 me. “Thank you!” my voice rang out to the driver. I said to Jim, \u201cThat\u2019s seven.\u201d We both smiled.<\/p>\n

Minutes later, a fellow stopped in the middle of the road, having read both sides’ signs. He looked at me and said, \u201cWhat\u2019s this all about?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m protesting StemExpress\u2019s profiteering on abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n

“So they don\u2019t do abortions?”<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said, \u201cBut they are making millions on selling baby body parts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s exaggerating,\u201d was all Jim\u00a0had time to say before the man\u00a0drove off – but not without first thanking me for being there.<\/p>\n

At this point the score was nine to eleven. Jim\u00a0was still ahead.<\/p>\n

Another man\u00a0drove back by twice just to clarify whose side he was on. He looked at me and said, “You should pack it in.” He was supporting Jim.<\/p>\n

But it wasn\u2019t long before Jim\u00a0and I were neck in neck at twelve supporters a piece. Then a couple walking down the sidewalk on the other side of the street stopped, read my signs and called out, \u201cCan I take your picture? I want to post it on my Facebook page. What you\u2019re doing is just great.\u201d With that vote of support, I pulled ahead and looked back only once.<\/p>\n

When a woman drove by and flipped me off, I said to Jim, \u201cThat one\u2019s for you.\u201d He was reluctant to take it, but I said, \u201cPeople express themselves in all sorts of ways. That was clearly a vote for your side.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though accepting his point, Jim\u00a0was clearly a nice man. At a big gust of wind, my unused signs were blown across the sidewalk and into the street\u00a0– and he tried to help me collect them.<\/p>\n

At\u00a012:55,<\/span>\u00a0Jim said he was packing it in. He\u2019d been there since\u00a011:45<\/span>. He acknowledged my decisive win. I said, \u201cI look forward to seeing you again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, you will, indeed,\u201d he said as he walked away and disappeared around a bend in the sidewalk.<\/p>\n

The security guard, who had been observing all of this, then asked me, \u201cSo, who won the contest?”<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, even though he gave himself an unfair advantage by starting at ten and giving me six, the final score was twenty to thirteen. My win.”<\/p>\n

The broadest smile spread across the guard\u2019s face. Then, as if to catch himself, he quickly said, \u201cI\u2019m just glad everything was amiable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMe too.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few minutes later I was carrying\u00a0my signs across the street to my car, thanking Jesus and acknowledging that the “win” wasn\u2019t mine. That was a win for the voiceless whose bodies are bought and sold for profit and desecrated in the name of science.<\/p>\n

But Placerville, California, knows – or at least the majority of people who passed down Pacific Street this day know – that despite Jim\u2019s show of support for StemExpress, the question of what should be done with the bodies of babies killed by abortion is not morally neutral. And despite all of the pro-abortion rhetoric since the shooting in Colorado Springs, what\u2019s been happening at that abortion facility, day in and day out, both before and after a madman let loose his gun on the innocent, is a violent tragedy too.<\/p>\n

All human life\u00a0–\u00a0large and small, born and\u00a0preborn\u00a0–\u00a0is worth standing on the sidewalk for, whether we win or lose.<\/p>\n
