{"id":82759,"date":"2015-12-16T18:24:39","date_gmt":"2015-12-16T23:24:39","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=82759"},"modified":"2015-12-17T11:28:42","modified_gmt":"2015-12-17T16:28:42","slug":"un-condemns-us-states-pro-life-laws-alabama-responds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/un-condemns-us-states-pro-life-laws-alabama-responds\/","title":{"rendered":"U.N. condemns U.S. states&#8217; pro-life laws; Alabama responds"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>After a 10-day mission to the United States, the <span id=\"ctl00_PlaceHolderMain_DisplayNewsID_lblNewsTitle\" class=\"lblNewsTitle\">United Nations Working Group on the issue of discrimination against women in law and in practice released a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=16872&amp;LangID=E\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> condemning pro-life policies in several states. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;expert group,&#8221; consisting of pro-abortion feminists\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/login?auth=0&amp;type=summary&amp;url=\/journals\/journal_of_womens_history\/v005\/5.3.zielinska.html\">Eleonora Zielinska<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/jwa.org\/encyclopedia\/article\/raday-frances\">Frances Raday<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendemocracy.net\/author\/alda-facio\">Alda Facio<\/a>, visited the states of Alabama, Oregon, and Texas. They took issue with the Hyde Amendment,\u00a0 and what the group considers to be\u00a0&#8220;imposition of severe barriers&#8221; to abortion access&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Women\u2019s reproductive rights include the constitutional guarantee under Roe v. Wade for a woman to be able to choose to terminate a pregnancy in the first trimester prior to viability. Although women have a legal right to terminate a pregnancy under federal law, ever increasing barriers are being created to prevent their access to abortion procedures. In 1976 the Hyde Amendment prevented federal Medicaid and Medicare coverage for the termination of a pregnancy except in cases where the life of the woman is in danger, in cases of rape and incest. Women\u2019s access to reproductive health services has been truncated in some states by imposition of severe barriers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u00a0These take the form of unjustified medical procedures, such as compelling women to undergo ultrasounds or to endure groundless waiting periods, withholding of early pregnancy abortion medications, imposing burdensome conditions for the licensing of clinics, which have resulted in the closing of clinics across the country leaving women without geographical access to sexual and reproductive health services.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The United Nations group specifically called out Alabama on several counts, including for the state&#8217;s\u00a0&#8220;history of severe violence against abortion providers.&#8221; Alabama State Auditor Jim Zeigler\u00a0was not impressed with the report, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2015\/12\/un_bashes_alabama_on_womens_ri.html\" target=\"_blank\">defended his state<\/a> against the U.N.&#8217;s comments regarding violence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We all are against violence against anyone, but the court systems and law enforcement are perfectly capable of handling that,&#8221; said Zeigler. &#8220;We don&#8217;t need the help of the U.N.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Zeigler\u00a0went on to question\u00a0the credibility of the report, arguing that\u00a0U.N. agents\u00a0failed to\u00a0contact church leaders, adoption advocates, or abortion alternative counselors. He\u00a0claimed the report is &#8220;not going to sit well with the people of Alabama, and\u00a0[the U.N. has]\u00a0no business doing this. They should be going to Syria or many, many other places besides Alabama.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The U.N. is preparing to try to dictate to Alabama what we must do on abortion&#8230; and other &#8216;progressive&#8217; issues,&#8221;\u00a0Zeigler said in a statement. &#8220;I will monitor this developing situation and report back.
