{"id":81792,"date":"2015-12-07T10:45:19","date_gmt":"2015-12-07T15:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=81792"},"modified":"2016-09-02T13:38:23","modified_gmt":"2016-09-02T17:38:23","slug":"study-finds-women-pregnant-disabled-babies-pressured-choose-abortion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-finds-women-pregnant-disabled-babies-pressured-choose-abortion\/","title":{"rendered":"Study finds women carrying babies with disabilities are pressured to abort"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The study &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/282\/6264\/621?variant=abstract\" target=\"_blank\">Attitudes of Patients after \u201cGenetic\u201d Termination of Pregnancy&#8221;<\/a> in the\u00a0British Medical Journal<em>\u00a0<\/em>found that\u00a0parents of babies aborted due to disability or \u201cfetal anomaly\u201d suffer depression and grief. \u00a0It also explained how doctors often rush women into making a decision whether or not to abort their baby.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The study says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Despite the shock and grief they may experience upon hearing the news of a fetal anomaly, the pregnant woman and her partner are usually urged to make the decision to terminate quickly. Behind the urgency is the physician\u2019s desire to avoid complications of \u201clate\u201d terminations of pregnancy. Because of the delays involved in amniocentesis, abortions may occur in the second and even third trimester pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In health care settings, the issue of such late abortions has raised ethical and legal questions. <strong>In one early study, most of the terminations occurred within 72 hours of the woman receiving the news of the abnormality.<\/strong> This hardly allows time for the couple to become informed about parenting children born with that anomaly and thus considering carrying through with the pregnancy.
