On Thursday, Republican presidential candidate and South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham delivered a scathing critique<\/a> of fellow Republicans who take what he sees as an overly hardline stance on abortion.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow many believe we\u2019ve got a problem with young women as Republicans?\u201d Graham asked in a speech to the Republican Jewish Coalition in Washington, DC. \u201cWhat do you think that problem is? Any idea? What? It\u2019s a variety of problems. How about abortion? Any of you think that does create a problem for the Republican Party?\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you can be pro-life as you wanna be, as long as you\u2019re sincere, and as long as you have a reasonable approach to the pro-life issue,\u201d he continued, but warned Republicans would lose the White House if their abortion stance \u201cdisconnect[s] us from America at large.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow many of you believe that there should be an exception for a woman who has been a victim of a rape and has become pregnant?\u201d he asked. \u201cI don\u2019t believe you can be pro-life and win an election, but if you\u2019re gonna tell a woman who\u2019s been raped she has to carry the child of the rapist, you\u2019re losing most Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n

Graham also singled out his primary competitor and fellow Senator Ted Cruz: \u201cIf the nominee of the Republican Party will not allow for an exception for rape and incest, they will not win. Ted Cruz doesn\u2019t have an exception for rape and incest.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to Cruz\u2019s no-exceptions pro-life stance, he disagrees with Graham on how to defund Planned Parenthood. Cruz has been one of the most aggressive advocates<\/a> of the government shutdown strategy, while Graham vehemently opposes<\/a> it. GOP contender Senator Marco Rubio also opposes<\/a> abortion in cases of rape and incest.<\/p>\n

Graham is a generally pro-life candidate who introduced<\/a> the 20-week abortion ban in the Senate. However, he has received criticism from pro-lifers on a number of related stances. During the confirmation hearings for Attorney General Loretta Lynch, he stressed he did not consider<\/a> her support of partial-birth abortion a deal-breaker; and following the controversy over the 20-week bill\u2019s rape exception at the beginning of the year, he advocated dropping its reporting requirement<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
