From the Washington Free Beacon come a pair of abortion-related statements<\/a> by former President Bill Clinton that are each eye-opening in very different ways. They come from audio recordings made by respected biographer and longtime Clinton friend Taylor Branch, after interviews he had with the president for his book The Clinton Tapes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Branch says that in 1996 Clinton expressed belief in a bizarre conspiracy theory about pro-life ex-Senator Rick Santorum – as well as ambivalence about late-term abortion…<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\u201c[Clinton] said something cryptic about Santorum,\u201d Branch said in the tape. \u201cHe said, \u2018Their child died a few hours after delivery.\u2019 Then he said, \u2018One day he\u2019ll be found out.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Branch initially thought that Clinton was saying that Santorum \u201cwould be found out as an airhead,\u201d but later came to the conclusion that Clinton\u2019s comment was much darker.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn retrospect, after he said that cryptic remark about his wife, I wondered if what he was saying was that it would be found out that what they said was actually an infant death was instead really an abortion,\u201d said Branch. \u201cThat they had an abortion and then said that the baby died shortly after birth as a way of covering it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Branch said Clinton was leaving a note to himself with the \u201ccryptic remark\u201d and made sure that the meaning was unclear.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

As the Free Beacon\u2019s Brent Scher recounts, \u201cthe Santorums aborted their son Gabriel\u201d is an old smear that is occasionally dredged up by particularly extreme and odious partisans for abortion, never mind that even the rabidly pro-abortion Salon debunked it in 2012<\/a>, interviewing an OB\/GYN who concluded that \u201cthe word \u2018abortion\u2019 probably shouldn\u2019t even be used in this context.\u201d<\/p>\n

They give the conspiracy-mongers\u2019 intentions the benefit of the doubt, saying the specifics of Karen Santorum\u2019s condition and the treatment of them would be easy for laymen to get confused, but Branch says Clinton \u201cspewed technical details\u201d like \u201ca medical specialist,\u201d making it harder to give him the same pass.<\/p>\n

So in the absence of specific, affirmative evidence that the truth was something other than what Santorum said, what possible reason would there be for Clinton to muse about him being \u201cfound out\u201d in relation to how \u201ctheir child died\u201d? Branch recounts Clinton \u201croll[ing] his eyes\u201d at Santorum and \u201cscathing of Santorum as a terrible candidate and an idiot.\u201d Is that it? Conjuring up malicious conspiracy theories about someone based solely on personal animus toward him is a deeply ugly characteristic in a President of the United States.<\/p>\n

Second, Clinton had some harsh words for his fellow pro-aborts\u2019 extremism:<\/p>\n

Clinton said that pro-choice activists \u201cframed the question selfishly by putting it in terms of a woman\u2019s right to do whatever she wanted,\u201d making it seem like they were fighting for a \u201cselfish woman\u2019s right to crush her baby\u2019s skull.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clinton saw some of the pro-choice stances as extreme, such as the belief that third-trimester abortion should be legal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe that if you can\u2019t make up your mind in the first six months, you don\u2019t have the right to have an abortion,\u201d Clinton said according to Branch.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said the pro-choice people have essentially allowed their own insensitivities to push them into a losing political situation and make a statesman out of Rick Santorum, which he rolled his eyes at,\u201d said Branch.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

That\u2019s all very interesting, considering Clinton vetoed<\/a> a partial-birth abortion ban, and his wife Hillary defended<\/a> and voted for<\/a> partial-birth abortion and opposes<\/a> banning abortions after five months. So, Mr. President, were you \u201cinsensitive,\u201d too? Is your wife fighting for \u201cselfishness\u201d?<\/p>\n

The answer is simple: Bill wasn\u2019t speaking from the goodness of his heart, but talking about the political inexpediency of the losing issue the abortion lobby saddled him with. Still, it\u2019s a remarkable admission that the man reporter Nina Burleigh once said she’d give sexual favors to<\/a> \u201cjust to thank him for keeping abortion legal\u201d knew all along that partial-birth abortion \u201ccrushed babies\u2019 skulls\u201d\u2026yet was perfectly willing to protect it anyway.<\/p>\n

The Free Beacon reports that President Clinton declined to comment on the revelations, which is in his and his wife\u2019s best interest\u2014surely they don\u2019t want the American people thinking about whether vicious lies about political opponents and knowing support for crushing the skulls of innocent children are values they want back in the White House.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
