Not at all, she said: \u201cThey would\u201d let women die on the floor, she said. \u201cThey would! Again, whatever their intention is, this is the effect.\u2019\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Catholic health-care providers in particular have long said they\u2019d have to go out of business without the conscience protections that Pelosi says amount to letting hospitals \u201csay to a woman, \u2018I\u2019m sorry you could die\u2019 if you don\u2019t get an abortion.\u201d Those who dispute that characterization \u201cmay not like the language,\u2019\u2019 she said, \u201cbut the truth is what I said. I\u2019m a devout Catholic and I honor my faith and love it .<\/em><em>\u2009<\/em><em>.<\/em><em>\u2009<\/em><em>. but they have this conscience thing\u2019\u2019 that she insists put women at physical risk, although Catholic providers strongly disagree. <!--more--><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>On one occasion, she said, laughing, one of her critics on the topic of abortion, speaking on the House floor, said, \u201cNancy Pelosi thinks she knows more about having babies than the pope. They think like this. And of course I do \u2014 I think the pope would agree \u2014 and I know more than you, too, mister.\u2019\u2019<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"..\/nancy-pelosi-ridicules-pro-life-christians-%E2%80%9Cthey-have-this-conscience-thing%E2%80%9D\/\">Click here<\/a> for Morgan Witt\u2019s excellent explanation of the truth behind the Protect Life Act. Here, let\u2019s focus on Pelosi\u2019s\u2026<em>curious<\/em>\u2026understanding of her faith. To begin with, her support for the right to abortion (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.therightscoop.com\/pelosi-waterboarding-bad-partial-birth-abortion-good-any-questions\/\">under basically any circumstances<\/a>) is <a href=\"http:\/\/hotair.com\/archives\/2008\/08\/24\/pelosi-lies-about-catholicism-and-abortion\/\">a direct, explicit rejection<\/a> of Catholic teaching stretching back all the way to 70 AD. Perhaps Tertullian said it best in 197 AD:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In our case, a murder being once for all forbidden, we may not destroy even the fetus in the womb, while as yet the human being derives blood from the other parts of the body for its sustenance. To hinder a birth is merely a speedier man-killing; nor does it matter whether you take away a life that is born, or destroy one that is coming to birth. That is a man which is going to be one; you have the fruit already in its seed.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Can you really call yourself \u201cdevout\u201d and claim to \u201chonor\u201d your faith while actively working to undermine its teachings on something as significant as murder? Of course not. But then, Pelosi seems to be operating from an entirely different definition of \u201cdevout,\u201d as indicated by how casually she appoints herself a better authority on abortion than the Pope.<\/p>\n<p>Even granting that a <a href=\"http:\/\/pelosi.house.gov\/about\/biography.shtml\">mother of five<\/a> knows more about the <em>experience of<\/em> <em>having<\/em> babies than the Pope, it doesn\u2019t follow that her word would trump his on abortion. Perhaps Rep. Pelosi would be so kind as to explain how her pregnancies revealed to her some game-changing insight as to either <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christiananswers.net\/q-aig\/aig-bibleandabortion.html\">the Bible&#8217;s teachings about human life<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/rightcal.blogspot.com\/2011\/07\/indisputable-fact-life-begins-at.html\">the scientific consensus regarding embryology<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Now, it\u2019s certainly Pelosi\u2019s right to reject the authority of any number of past or present Church leaders. But if she does, she should at least be honest about that fact and its implications. <em>She\u2019s<\/em> the one choosing to identify with a particular belief system, and like it or not, religions are a package deal. By signing on, she agrees to accept the Church\u2019s understanding of fundamental good and evil.<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi seems not to grasp\u2014or care\u2014that faith is about submitting to a wisdom and a will higher than one\u2019s own, about recognizing that the limited, clouded perspective of mere mortals does not define truth and justice.
