Pro-abortion activists have<\/a> been<\/a> utterly<\/a> shameless<\/a> in tripping over themselves to exploit and politicize the Thanksgiving weekend shooting at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood, and it\u2019s no wonder why\u2014actual anti-abortion killings are so rare<\/a> that whenever one happens, they\u2019ve got to make the most of the fleeting opportunity to seize the moral high ground.<\/p>\n

In a segment that all the usual suspects are hailing (Salon thinks<\/a> it\u2019s \u201cgutsy\u201d for him to play to his leftist audience\u2019s leftist prejudices), Comedy Central host Larry Wilmore blames<\/a> Fox News and the Republican candidates for Robert Lewis Dear\u2019s rampage:<\/p>\n

Fox and the GOP love making up a big batch of Kool-Aid and doling it out like it\u2019s Jonestown. And they start\u2014no, they start by pouring a pitcher of fact-less accusations, add a splash of fear-mongering, and then they just stir up the base. This time it had to do with Friday\u2019s tragic shooting.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Comparing your political opponents to a homicidal cultist who fed his own followers cyanide<\/a>: that\u2019s not fear-mongering at all<\/em>, apparently.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo more baby parts.\u201d Okay, now, this could be excused as just a nut uttering some crazy thing, but that sounds very specific, \u201cno more baby parts.\u201d I mean, almost as if it was served up in a nice cold pitcher of Fox and Friends Kool-Aid.<\/p>\n

Dead baby\u2019s head Buick parts? You know, I have to apologize to my mechanic who, I thought was lying this whole time. \u201cY\u2019know, looks like your dead baby\u2019s head has gotten loose Larry, sorry, uh, that\u2019s what that clankin\u2019 noise is.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This is a small point, but can we just take a moment to call out the lesser sin of these Jon Stewart-esque news comedians, that they\u2019re just not funny<\/em>? The line Wilmore\u2019s mocking here is Mike Huckabee saying Planned Parenthood \u201crip[s] up their body parts and sell them like they are parts to a Buick.\u201d Satire is when you use humor to illustrate the absurdity of what you\u2019re mocking, but it only works if there\u2019s something there to mock\u2014but Planned Parenthood really was<\/em> doing what Huckabee said, making Wimore\u2019s sneering just, well, sneering. In fact, Huck\u2019s original line is a more successful example of satire than Larry\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Okay, so let\u2019s review. Since the summer, Fox and the GOP ramped up the rhetoric about baby body parts being sold to Planned Parenthood. The Kool-Aid. Cut to: a guy shoots up a Planned Parenthood, then rants about baby parts. Now, you guys know what Occam\u2019s Razor is, right? The simplest explanation is probably the correct one, so do I feel comfortable saying he was at least partially motivated by the Right\u2019s demonization of Planned Parenthood? [Sound clip plays of the Kool-Aid Man saying, \u201coh yeah!\u201d] Thank you, Kool-Aid Man. Is he behind the wall? I think Kool-Aid Man is behind the wall.<\/p>\n

But, look. If you think it\u2019s unfair of me to make that connection, here\u2019s the deal: since that baby-parts Kool-Aid was brewed, the FBI has been concerned with escalating violence on Planned Parenthood facilities. [Video plays of CBS News report about law enforcement concerns.]<\/p>\n

Jesus, FBI, who\u2019s you\u2019re new informant, Dwayne Incrediblyf***ingobvious?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Finding the correct explanation also requires taking into account something called \u201cevidence,\u201d Larry. Like the fact that Dear lived for years<\/a> in a secluded shack that probably didn\u2019t get Fox News considering it had no electricity, and was a fringe conspiracy theorist who told people to get metal roofs to keep the government from spying on them. Like the fact that his talk of \u201cbaby parts\u201d came amid ramblings so disjointed<\/a> that police were reluctant to conclude his motive was anti-abortion. Like the fact that he wasn’t registered as a political party member<\/a> and area pro-lifers had never seen him before. Like the fact that his ex-wife says<\/a> abortion was \u201cnever really a topic of discussion\u201d for him.<\/p>\n

Second, Wilmore hangs his entire thesis on how many times Fox and GOP figures repeated the phrase \u201cbaby parts.\u201d What he fails to account for (because it would discredit the entire segment) is that they were stating an incontrovertibly true fact<\/em>. Selling baby parts is literally and precisely what Planned Parenthood was caught doing. Let\u2019s break it down:<\/p>\n
